Hi I'm looking for help with which herbs and spices help control BG levels and how we can include them in my diet. Also I know there are some of the smartest diabetics out here and if anyone can point me to some clinical studies that would be super helpful please!

Thanks

Cinammon is supposed to be very good but sorry, I don't do scientific papers. Just Google it !

Sometimes have it on cereal and I have heard many good things about it. Good luck !

Here's a very long thread on loads of herbs I started soon after my own diagnosis.

http://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/cinnamon-and-bitter-melon-for-reducing-fasting-levels.27056/

Overall I found Gymnema the most effective although people reported some success with Cinnamon, Bitter Melon and Banaba. A diabetes medication available in India that contains predominantly Bitter Melon has WHO certification. There are various science papers (referenced throughout the thread) that show all the above have an effect on levels. Bitter Melon and Gymnema are both prescribed diabetes medications in some countries.

I find chaat masala helps reduce my blood sugar.

In an attempt to find a scholarly paper to back this up, I found the following which is interesting reading, recommends curcumin, and references other research into spices and their effects.

I have been using turmeric ever since I was diagnosed a year or so ago...I either mix it with vegetables and cocnut oil (or milk) or else a big teaspoon stirred in water. I test first thing in the morning commonly now about 5.5 to 6 mm if BG is a Little high I take it in water. retesting after a few minutes commonly brings the measure down from 6 to 5.2 or so.. also green leafy vege has a similar effect.

I use cinnamon, curry, turmeric, fenugreek, fennel, (whew!) and chamomile regularly. This, in addition to a low-carb diet, could be what is causing my blood sugar to become lower.

yes bitter melon is very good for diabetes and in india most people rely on it very strongly . i am also taking it with salt and little pepper,

I found it worked well although I had to buy it in capsule form as I tried powdered bitter melon but the taste is pretty horrible!

Hi There, been looking at this thread, sounds very interesting, firstly where can you buy the powdered form from Pawan, how much do you use , and what time of day do you take it, and xyzzy, where did you buy the capsules from?

I got everything from Puritans Pride web site. It is based in the States and sells a wide range of stuff all properly packaged just like you'd get from say Holland & Barrett over here for vastly more money. You just have to accept that delivery will be 10 days and sometimes you'll get caught by customs wanting the VAT (but even then its still far cheaper). They do (did) a great deal on Gymnema which I found just as effective as Bitter Melon.

TRUST ME THIS IS EFFECTIVE

Ah, yes, Puritan Pride, I know and remember that vitamin company well! Going as far back as the 80s, I used to enjoy going to their main outlet in Bohemia (Long Island), NY. They have an excellent wide-range of products, unbeatable prices and fantastic deals. I still occasionally have their products shipped to me,here in Midwestern USA. Glad to know that my UK pals are using Puritan Pride too!

Currently, though, I mostly use my local natural food store for my vitamins, supplements and herbs. I've recently tried a product that is not really an herb, but, a natural sweetener which contains mega vitamins and minerals. It's called Coconut Palm Oil, and it has a low hypoglycemic index as well as nutrients which stabilize blood sugar. I'm doing pretty well with it, so far. It's delicious and no sugar spikes at all.

Karela is what I purchased in tablet form. There were some great deals on ebay from reputable sellers so you could also try there.

I am taking fenugreek along with food. It is having a bitter taste. I am also taking Jamun fruit extract. I am taking these along with metformin. These are fibrous and good antixoidents which are good for general health as well. There are lot of information in google...
