What are the right questions?

I do not have diabetes
My 17 month old is in hospital recovering from DKA and is newly diagnosed T1. She is on the
mend and we understand what is happening now. At some point I expect to have the councillors taking us through the next steps and the ones that will get her home. What are the right questions- the ones that you wish you had asked at this stage?
Any advice appreciated. Thank you
 

I'd also look on the parents forum on this site and also on Facebook: there are several groups of parents with T1 children with years of experience.

For excellent info about type 1, blood tests, medicines, etc., start with the home page of Diabetes.co.uk - and then don't hesitate to ask us online teenies and cronies for help, hints, etc.

Hi there, my son has just been through the same in November was admitted to hospital with DKA he's type 1 . How are you coping?
 
Hi, it is great to speak with people that understand this. Thank you for your post.
It has been a roller coaster but we finally feel that we are getting a few steps toward both understanding how to control her levels and sometimes actually achieving it. Absolutely hating the night time testing though.

How about you?
 
Just a note to both of you... Make sure you claim DLA for your children. You are fully entitled to it as you are going to have extra care with your children's health, like getting up during the night etc...
 
Thank you for your reply. We are getting there slowly and getting to grips with control also. It's been a very hard pill to swallow as with everyone on this. I thought I was coming to terms with it all but be so tearful today. It's a 24/7 job as he's so young and can't tell me how he's feeling. Have you been offered the pump?

The diabetes nurse gave me a form to fill in and I have done that. Still waiting on reply. Whatever money he's entitled too I will save for holidays away and give him best life possible. Don't want money to be honest just a cure. Thanks for your help, means a lot
 
I know exactly what you mean. Good readings followed by a spike high or low for no obvious reason. We have been told that we may get a pump but this also has its pros and cons. Hard to see any light at the end of the tunnel.

I just hope that in time things will settle and we are making the right decisions. I guess you can only do your best and try to get though the bad days whilst still enjoying being a parent.
 
Is your daughter coping ok with injections? Is she a good eater? I find it hard finding the right balance off what he's going to eat for the right amount of insulin.

Pray for a cure every night.
