What could it be? Feeling worried . .

Just a bit of background info . . .

I was diagnosed with Type 2 recently and saw the DSN almost a week ago. Everything went ok at the appointment and I handed in my urine sample and was told they'd be testing it for protein. I also had high blood pressure (162/100) and when tested by my Dr about 2 weeks prior it was also high although she didn't tell me the reading and told me not to worry (I'd found out my diabetes diagnosis at the Drs appointment).

Had a message left on my answerphone from the Drs surgery this morning but didn't get home until late this evening. The message was just someone giving me their name and asking me to phone them. They didn't say it was the surgery but when I checked the call back number it was the surgery.

So now I'm quite worried. Could they have found something untoward in my urine sample? Or could it be connected with the high blood pressure? Or both?

My fasting blood sugars, I feel are not overly high. My first test was just over 8 mmols and the second was just over 7 mmols with HbA1c of 44.

I can't do anything until tomorrow morning and just know I'm not going to sleep well for worrying. I know I should try to "forget" it but stressing now

It's just as likely to be about something positive or neutral as it is something negative.

I do think something needs to be done about your high BP, but I guess you are going to ask about that next time you get the opportunity.

I know it's easier said than done, but try not to worry... hope you have a good sleep. Hugs.

Thanks @CatLadyNZ I'm a bit of a worrier I'm afraid and all these worst case scenerio's usually come rushing into my head. I really hope it's nothing to worry about!

The DSN said for me to wait about 2 weeks and then go to the surgery and re-take my own BP reading using the machine in the waiting room. But I may just book another appointment with my Dr as if it's still running high I'm going to have to see her and discuss meds anyway. Also, if the cuff's too small for the machine it'll be no good using the one in the waiting room anyway.

My in-laws had one they weren't using but although I don't have huge upper arms they aren't skinny either! I'm afraid the cuff flew open and off when I tried it!

I'll keep people posted . . . . x

It could be something as bizarre as they lost your urine sample and you need to wee all over again.

Worrying tonight won't make whatever it is any better or worse, but you'll just be more tired when you hear about it.

The trouble with a one-off BP test, especially at the surgery, is that it might be inaccurate due to physical or psychological stress. A better approach is for them to give you a 24 hour monitor to take away and wear. Or they can do 3 tests over 30 minutes while you lie down in a quiet room at the surgery, resting (that's the test I had). An accurate result is needed so they can get the medication dose right, if they are going to use meds.

This made me smile. I can cope with peeing in a pot! Well, peeing into something else and then getting it into the sample pot to be more precise

I've not heard of a monitor. How does that work? I don't like my BP being taken as sometimes it feels like my arm is being crushed to a pulp! Maybe that's what I could suggest if it's connected to my BP as I have a feeling a work colleague may have had a monitor recently.

I'm not sure how the 24 hour monitor works as I've only read about it here. I wish I could remember who it was that had it so I could tag them in for you. Here is some info about it:

I agree, I find BP tests very uncomfortable, more so if it's done by a machine than by the HCP pumping the cuff up by hand.

Thank You I'll have a quick look at the link and then I'd better get to bed as I will never be up for work in the morning!

When I was first diagnosed with HBP I was given a machine to take home to measure my own so they could get a set of readings over 7 and then 14 days.

Although the eventual outcome was that I went on medication, I was quite surprised how the readings fluctuated both during the day and on different days at the same times.

Same with me. Took bp machine home and was told to use it 2x in morning, and 2x in evening, then they averaged the result to see if I had high bp.

Then I decided I needed to have a way of spotting it in future (my bp, as with my dawn phenomenon seems to be stress linked), and I bought a monitor for about £30 from Amazon. Wonderful thing. Don't need to use it often, but it certainly gives peace of mind. And after you have practiced for a while, it eliminates any white coat syndrome you have, for home testing at least.

Had a 24 hr BP check. Had to keep the cuff on all day and over night and wear the monitor on a strap around my waist, not that I had a waist then. I made me jump every time it inflated but didn't disrupt my sleep.

Hi. I managed to get hold of the Surgery before work this morning. Now, it was both good and bad. They'd phoned to tell me my Dr had written a letter for me to go to Weight Watchers free for 3 months. But, when I asked about the results of my urine test the receptionist said it was abnormal but that was normal!!

Did you want a referral to Weight Watchers?
I can't think of a worse form of torture.
But then, I'm not normal.

I've made an appointment to see my Dr at the end of next week. And to top all that I've had a nosebleed at work (I never get nosebleeds). It has to be stress as my father in law passed away at the beginning of this month. Not sure I cope with much more being thrown at me!

Hugs.

Called in to the surgery to collect repeat prescription for citalopram this afternoon. Whilst there I used the blood pressure monitor in the waiting room to self check. Had a massive shock as it registered 206/109!!! I tried to do it again but waited 10 mins but it didn't work properly. So I went to reception and asked if I could see someone there and then. The triage nurse booked me to the nurse practitioner and I had a bit of a wait. He checked my BP again and it was still high at 188/100. Apparently, each time my previous Dr had checked it (since 2011) it had been high and he queried why I wasn't on medication for it. You tell me?!!!!!! My previous Dr before he retired had been pretty useless. So now I've been prescribed Lisinopril and have to make an appointment for 2 weeks time to get my BP rechecked and have a blood test.

I queried my "abnormal" urine sample too. There wasn't protein in it but some sort of albumin product was in it but only a trace. I asked what this meant and he said the mess he'd just prescribed would treat this. What a day!!!

Pleased to hear you have been given some BP meds. You did absolutely the right thing asking to see someone on the spot.
High BP affects the kidneys, so I'm guessing your urine abnormality was related to that.

Fingers crossed that Lisinopril does the trick. Sometimes people need an increased dose, or a second BP med. I'm just so relieved you are getting treatment now. You won't necessarily need to be on BP meds forever, will have to wait and see.

Thank you. Just "glad" I went in now and have started on the new meds this morning. I'm still shocked at how high the reading was and am glad someone was able to see me.
