Just curious as I've neglected myself the past 5 years I'm going for my first clinic review on Thurs and am worried if the pump is a possibility for me? Please forgive my ignorance on this subject it's something I just can't get my head around for some reason. Thanks all xo

Neglecting yourself for 5 years is a pretty good way to jump to the front of the queue for a pump. ;-)

I was having 5 or more hypos a day once I had my little boy when I was offered a pump, it has changed my life dramatically its lots of hard work but so worth it.

Serious answer - unless you are under 18 you need to have a consistently above-target HBa1c, despite having been taught "structured diabetes management", ie DAFNE or similar. Or, you have a within-target HBa1c but excessive hypos and/or loss of hypo awareness. So any way you look at it, a pump is not a reward for good behaviour. :-/

You need to show some good effort, but you must not show good results

@Spiker I'm terrified that they will even mention the pump! I had some idea that it was linked to hypos so thought that would rule me out. I feel it's taken me 5 years to get used to injections I'm not sure I would cope very well. I have never been on a dafne/diabetes management course so maybe that will be a better option? Have gotten myself into a bit of a tizzy. Thank you for your reply though this forum is wonderful I wish I had found it sooner

Ah sorry I didn't understand you. You don't want a pump? I don't think they are going to force you. It's hard enough for the people who really want one to get one. DAFNE is a great idea for you, see how you get on after that. Good luck!

Hi Samantha1308
The pump is not as bad as you imagine and could really help, although you will need to complete Dafne first anyway. See what they discuss at your appointment but do ask to get on Dafne as it really does help get you on track

No one can force you onto a pump, you have to want a pump and put the effort in for it to work, so if your happy on MDI and want to stick with it then just do that, the DAFNE course will go a long way to get you back on track, however if you want to know a little more about pumps and the criteria for getting one then have a look at the following:

Forget the pump. Nobody will force one on you, but it sounds like you would really benefit from the DAFNE course. Don't worry about being "told off". Just tell them your control is rotten because you don't really know how to control it, all your efforts don't work, and you have given up trying, but you have now heard about the DAFNE course and you want one. In fact that's the truth. The NHS a has finally realized the reason 70% of Type 1s don't control their diabetes is because they don't really know how, and meeting them every six months and saying, "increase your insulin," just doesn't do it. Don't blame yourself, just go and get the course.
