Yes, try to aim at getting below 7.8 two hours after your meal. Don't worry about any readings immediately after a meal, it's how quickly it comes down that matters. Also, your early morning reading should be below 6.0.
Don't worry if they are not to begin with. It does take time but, given time and some careful eating, it nearly always comes down. When you get the 6.0 and 7.8 readings, go for 5.5 and 7.0. Just keep trying to get them lower and lower. Unless you are on stronger medications, your body won't let you get much below 4.0, it'll start creating its own glucose from its own fatty stores. But, that's good because it means you are losing weight.
It takes time though. I ws in the 9s and 10s and then 8s and 9s and then 7s and 8s and it was 3 or 4 months before I was seeing the fist occasional sub 6 reading. Now I am mostly 4s and 5s and maybe high 6s two hours after my main evening meal. It's taken a year though.
