What do you consider a dangerously high blood glucose level?

My last HBa1c was 5.7% but recently for an unknown reason I've been getting very high blood sugar readings and higher than normal... just did one and got a level of 27.9. Just wondered what sort of levels you should show a worrying concern to?!

Re: What do you consider a dangerously high blood glucose le

the simple answer is that normal is between 4 and 6 and anything above that damages your body

in a non-diabetic, the blood glucose rises up to 8 after meals, but returns down to between 4 and 6 withing a couple of hours

Re: What do you consider a dangerously high blood glucose le

Don't like to cause unnecessary worry but I would definitely find 27.9 far too high for comfort. In fact I have done enough testing now to be able to make a prediction about my levels and I get concerned every time my levels are not as expected.

Most days I try to stay in single figures but I still get it wrong occasionally. 27.9 is way above anything I have ever achieved. Sorry.

So, you are saying that he should go to A&E with a BG of 6.1 mmol/l?

I'd say > 15 mmol/l if only because that's when you are usually advised to test for ketones. Have you checked for ketones? If your BG doesn't respond to insulin adjustment and correction doses, I'd go see a doctor.

Who said that?

Hi, Daniel1021

My first thought is something is wrong with your meter or strips.(27.9 did you mean 7.9)

Oddly enough I had a high reading this morning. Straight away I tested on my other hand and the result was normal. ( I am using my final batch of test strips prior to my next delivery in a few days).

beat of luck,

Roy. :)

I worry if I go above 10. 12 at a push. Anything higher in my opinion is a problem.

If your rocking sugars over say 14 or 15, start checking for keytones. Only them go to A&E of keytones are present.

If you know how to adjust your own insulin, give yourself a correction dose to bring you to "normal" levels.

Hope that helps.

You need to make adjustments to your insulin to compensate for the highs Daniel,if your unsure how to do this then have a chat with your DSN.

Re: What do you consider a dangerously high blood glucose le

even doctors are likely to take action at Bg over 20!
"Dangerously high" depends on context. above 7.5 consistently over months and years is going to do damage [even 6 is likely to :( ]
A single reading of 20+ without presence of a lot of ketone isn't a medical emergency. With considerable ketone, it is. I personally try to keep in the 4 - 6 range as near as possible all the time and get cross wit5h myself if i go over 6.5.
My answer to that is to cut back HARD on carbs.

Daniel, are you recently diagnosed? It could be that you are finishing the Honeymoon Period, where your body produces some insulin again before stopping completely. If so, you need to adjust your insulin. Like Noblehead said, it's best that you get advice on this from your DSN.

Re: What do you consider a dangerously high blood glucose le

Hey guys, thanks for all the advice!! I know it's a very late reply I couldn't remember my password! In the end, the on-call doctor came out and took 4 hours to get to me so by the time I'd been seen and had a lot of insulin to manage it, my BG was back in the "normal" zone. Since then my insulin has been adjusted! With the job I do lows and highs can catch you out with every measure in place not to! Also my diet is very good being the reason it took this long to diagnose me! Thanks for all your replies though its very much appreciated, great to know you're not always alone! Just wondering has anyone ever had any troubles with the equipment being faulty? (Pens, Glucose meters etc)

Hi Daniel, Before you do a test make sure you wash your hands as it may have been that you've got something sweet on your fingers which would explain the high reading. Another thing you could check is your meter. I don't know which one you've got but I've got an Accu-Check Aviva and they do a solution that you can use to check the accuracy of the meter. I do mine about three times a year for reassurance more than anything else.

Hi Daniel

I'm new to all this, I have been diagnosed as a type 2 last month,, my readings were between 15/22 mmol. Which is very high, since then I have been put on new tablets. 3wks on and they are between 8/14, so decreasing slowly. I too was worried. Did u say u r type 1? Was or are u on tablets?

Louise.
