Dutch student doing research: There is a lot of negative chat going on on insulines like levemir, lantus etc. What are the good things about them? How did these make your life better? Thanks!

Hi

I really like Levemir as I've found that it gives me quite a flat basal profile with fewer hypos than when I was on my previous (human mixtard) regime. I feel less 'up and down' on Levemir. I'd be upset if anyone changed my insulin from Levemir as it seems to suit me well. I've never used Lantus so I don't have anything to compare Levemir to.

Novorapid is also okay. I only take small doses. Again, I don't have anything to compare it to except for human mixtard (which I hated). The reason I hated mixtard is that it gives you much less flexibility and I had to eat to my dosage rather than dose around my eating (if that makes sense)!

What's your research for?

I have been on Levemir for about 18 months now and it is extremely good better than Lantus, especially if you are on a split dose. It gives a much more even profile than all long acting insulins I have used and I seem to get less hypos especially during the night.
Cheers

I too have only ever used Levemir and find it an excellent regime. It also claims - and perhaps this is correct - to not lead to as much weight gain as other insulins (which are after all simply a form of growth hormone and my girth needs no assistance on that score!!)

I use Humalog, which is very fast and effective.
I also use Humulin, which is slower acting, with a flatter profile and I find works well with a diet low in carbohydrate.
I've just changed my basal insulin from Lantus to Levemir. I had no particular problems with Lantus, other than some hypos when I first started until I got the doses right. It works much better as a split dose I found.
The Levemir has been fine so far (2 weeks). If anything, I think I'm beginning to regain some hypo awareness, which is why I wanted to try it. Again, I split the dose.

All the best,

fergus

I have been diabetic for over 30 years now, and i have been on many different insulins..and Levimir is the best yet, giving me far better control. I split teh dose too, and was changed onto Levimir, when I was pregnant, as I seemed to "run out" of basal insulin after 18 hours or so. I have no idea why it wasn't suggested why I didn't split my lantus, except that teh profile of levimir, suited my needs better.

Personally, I love the basal bolus routine, as I am indecisive, don't always know what i am going to eat until I star cooking, and it suited me well during my student days, when mylife was very erratic. I like the fact that I can change the insulin to suit my life, and not change my life to suit my insulin. This is not the case for everybody though, and my strongest belief is that people should be allowed, where possible, to use what best works for them...rather than the Drs favourite insulin.

Please tell us about your research :?:

My son found Lantus painful to inject as it stung, apparently it has a higher ph, which he seemed sensitive to. Now on Levemir as his basal insulin and much happier, but may need to split the dose as its not lasting the full 24hrs, seeems to run out after about 18 hrs. Very reluctant to do this as at the age of 10yrs i think to ask him to have 5 injections per day instead of 4 is asking too much of him. Bolus insulin is humalog and works brilliantly.

Same here!
Even with Lantus I found it was a choice between going hypo at night or being high during the day, apparently I need less basal overnight than during the day. Levemir (twice daily) is the first insulin that has kept my bs stable day and night and given me proper control of my diabetes, lower HbA1c without bad hypos.
