Hi,

My fasting blood sugar was 9 point something first thing and has remained about 10 before meals and as high as 11 2hours after. So no great spikes. I have been doing low carb as best I can for 5 days now but sugars still too high. How long can I expect it to take before it is a normal level.
I have had 5 days of metformin my Hb1ac was 98.

Food today

Cheese and mushroom omelette and 2 sausages
Lunch 2 bbq chicken skewers
Dinner grilled salmon and a packet of broccoli, baby corn , fine beans and a couple of carrot strips
Snack small bit of red pepper tortilla ( contained some potato)

Thanks in advance

I had similar readings like yours when I got back on track again in May. Only now, after 6-7 weeks of low carb, am I seeing results around 6, and my fbg is variable, but a bit higher. I’m not on any meds, but from what I understand, metformin helps a bit with the dawn phenomenon (so your fasting blood glucose) and increases insulin sensitivity somewhat, so it won’t have a huge impact on your levels. In other words, you need to continue eating low carb, checking your bgl when eating new things, and accept it’ll take time. Your body had a long time to get to the levels you saw last week, so it won’t get back to normal in less than a week. Diabetes is a marathon, not a sprint.

Congratulations on starting the low-carb journey.
As for how long, we are all individual, both in the length of time or how low we need to go.
Are you checking before then 2 hours after meals? I know my body goes high with corn.

With an hba1c of 98, your average blood glucose was likely around 15, so you've already dropped quite a bit in only 5 days of low carb and metformin, well done!

Well done getting on the road to recover. Might be good to log your food into an app that calculates carbs. I use Carb Manager just to give me an approximate measurement as I like to stay under 20g a day

I think will do that. I never know how many I’m eating. I thought those lo carb wraps would be ok but my blood sugar went from 8.6 to 14.5 at teatime. I had it with chilli ( beans removed ) a dollop of creme fraiche and cheese and two tablespoons of brown basmati I was raging! I had the same chilli wit the same rice and a pack of fake rice( oat protein and water out of Holland and Barratt and had no spike. So at least that has suggested that I can’t have the wrap but I might be able to have a teeny bit of brown basmati rice. It’s all a big learning exercise. I will get there eventually.

you're lucky I can’t eat rice whatever colour it is :arghh: I have cauliflower rice or roast cauliflower florets which are my favourites. There is a great flaxseed wrap recipe on YouTube by heavenly fan. Check her out she has quite a few good recipe.
