What glucose levels before symptoms start?

Not really knowing what's going on inside my Endocrine system!!!
Hi all

something the consultant said last month that got me thinking. He said for my double fig readings (in the teens) I was unusually symptomatic and also at A1c of 8.6 this is not usually the level to get the significant symptoms I was experiencing.

So odd, as all my friends and family have commented on how well I am again. They said I was a different person last year, they used words like 'quiet, tired, sad, irritable, snappy, thinner, gaunt'.

I remember very well all the other symptoms on top of that.

Is there a typical glucose level that leads to Diabetes symptoms?

Well for a really depressing read which certainly grabbed my attention when I came across it on the excellent Blood Sugar 101 site.

Certainly puts the max 8.5 after 2 hours into perspective! You have been warned.

Yes it is depressing because I feel we will be-wella are-going in the opposite direction or at least he NHS are - in toleraing much higher levels.

Just as an aside ,looking around tht site I discovered the answer to why my left eye has become so sensitive to any change in levels after my caaract operation. Thanks for that.

Sorry Sanober; not quite sure what he was saying here; was it that an HbA1C of 8.6 shouldn't give you symptoms?

Hey Sanober!

Don't forget that you were spiking pretty high after eating even though your HbA1c wasn't that high. I had the same issue 9 months into my diagnosis. At diagnosis of Type 2, I had no symptoms, but at 9 months, I had a whole load of things going wrong - thirst, frequent urination, constant glucose in my urine. My HbA1c was still fairly low, but my post-meal spikes (when I finally started measuring them) were going as high as 26, but were usually in the teens. So I was definitely getting symptoms at about your levels. It was only when I got rediagnosed with LADA and put on insulin that I started to feel better - and then I realised just how bad I had been feeling.

Hi Grazer yes that's what he seemed to suggest.

Interesting xyzzy , a year of tingling (sometimes burning) nerve pain from my neck to three fingers on the left side disappeared as soon as I started insulin.

Ah Smidge, thank you. I forgot about the most meal spikes, still getting them here and there, today was bad. I feel so weird when am around 11 onwards, my forehead feels odd and I feel sick. Around mid teens I can't concentrate at all and have trouble talking and feel lethargic.

I remember that what made me go to the GP was the constant peeing esp at night. The Urologist did a urine test and that led to fasting and A1C 6.1 which is laughable considering that some folk were around 12/13 A1C at diagnosis.

Just wondering why the consultant said i was unusually symptomatic. Is this akin to T1.5 types only?

Ok; an HbA1c of 8.5 equates to overall average BGs of 12.5, so I'd have thought your symptoms were typical of someone with BGs in that range. Can't see why your consultant is saying it's unusual. I'm not that familiar with 1.5 I'm afraid, but I don't think symptoms related to high BGs vary that much from other types. Perhaps you need another chat with him to clarify what he means.
