Say my bs is 5.5 before I ate a meal what would be a success and how do you judge it so for instance I had fish in chips what is the aim for your blood sugar to be after 2 hours and what would not be a good result from the same starting blood sugar hope the question makes sense

The official advice is that your blood sugar level should be less than 8.5 two hours after eating but many people are more stringent than this and say that your level should be no more than 2 higher than before you started eating and never more than 7.5. It's up to you what you prefer.

You need to set your own targets. The NHS guidelines say under 8.5 at 2 hours (4 to 7 before you eat) but this is very generous. Most of us follow the "under 2 rule", no more than 2 higher that when you start, initially at least, then aiming for less. Of course, it all depends what you eat and when you test, and more importantly, when it returns to normal.

Are you Type 1 or Type 2? It makes a difference in what you can expect and how you implement changes because of the time insulin takes to act and finish acting. As a Type 1, my own goal is to have both readings within the normal range. So if I go into the meal with a blood sugar at the lower end of the normal range, and after the meal it is at the higher end of the normal range, I am happy. That is a rise of more than 2, but it is still not doing any damage. If I go in with a reading of 4.0 and two hours later I'm 6.0, I'm almost definitely heading for a hypo, so I prefer a reading a bit higher (but still normal) after. I can't see why that wouldn't apply for T2s as well ( without the hypo, unless they're on meds that can cause hypos).

Was pre diabetic hba1c was 40 just there doing low carb but last few days now my bs has been around 6 which is starting to worry me that's when functioning normal not fasting or so on

Why is a 6.0 worrying you? And when is it 6.0? I think you are worrying about nothing, which in itself won't be helping because worry is stressful, and stress raises BS levels.

I'm not overly worrying it was 6 when I came in from work about 4 hours after I last ate

Nothing wrong with that. How do you travel home from work? Walk, public transport, drive? Walking can raise BS levels initially, and driving or public transport can be stressful, also likely to raise BS levels. What were you 2 hours after you last ate? That is the important reading.

OK cheers for the advice will check at half 9 as that will be 2 hours after the advice is much appreciated

I had fish in chips what is the aim for your blood sugar to be after 2 hours and what would not be a good result
Last time I had fish and chips and a lot of ketchup (v sugary), after 2 hours my BS was 12.6, so that frightened me something chronic. I have since tried fish without batter and a few chips and that was ok, but what's the point?
Personally from 5.5 I would like to see no more than a 6.5 after 2 hours.

I wouldn't eat fish and chips to be fair just used that as an example just wanted to know what was a good reading seems to be no more than 2 from when you started eating
