What does the word mellitus mean?
Diabetes mellitus is derived from the Greek word diabetes meaning siphon - to pass through and the Latin word mellitus meaning honeyed or sweet. This is because in diabetes excess sugar is found in blood as well as the urine.

I think mellitus just means honey - diabetes mellitus doesn't mean anything different to just diabetes, just means you are being fancy and throwing in a bit of unnecessary Greek/Latin (? - I went to a comprehensive school...). You will often see DM1 or DM 2 in medical records as shortenings for diabetes mellitus type 1 or 2.

It's just the full medical name/description for diabetes, and it also used to be called by the English version of its hybrid Greek/Latin name - i.e. sugar diabetes.

Well before we had our modern techniques for diagnosing diabetes, ancient "medics" could detect/diagnose it by the sweet smell (or taste! ) of diabetic urine.
