Hi fantastic family,
I am back after long time to this forum. Seems like with my careless, my blood level has gone up and GP is indicating for medication. Since i am new, i want to know what would be your suggestion?
1. Go for med? Which med? Once on med, is it lifetime on med?
2. Try diet and changing life style and check blood level after 3 months and go from there.

Thanks all,

Hi there Faith - When you say your numbers have gone up; do you know what the numbers are at the moment?

Many people, living with T2, find that with attention to their diet they can improve things - in many cases, quite a lot. If you do decide to go for meds, there is nothing to day that would have to be forever. If your numbers are very high, there could be an argument for having a bit of help to bring the numbers down a bit, then review.

Again, many who have taken meds; either on diagnosis, or a bit later have found themselves able to reduce and/or stop them altogether.

My choice, when diagnosed was to try diet for a while. I managed to reduce my numbers enough not to have need medication at all - so far.

These really are choices to discuss with your Doctor/Nurse and for your own thinking and decisions.

Thanks for so motivating, kind words. Again it was me and my fault. My number is 10.5 on fasting, which is ridiculously high. Thanks again for your kind words.

Can I ask what was your number on diagnosis? Just thinking it may be helpful in making decision for me. My number is 10.5 on fasting.

That depends which number you mean; whether it was the check looking at the last 3 months (HbA1c) or a random blood test, like a snapshot at that moment.

These are my numbers, since diagnosis:

T2 since October 2013. No medication.

A random blood glucose test done in October 2013 was 15.6. (Ouch!)

HbA1c:
October 13: 73 or 8.8% (How did that happen?)
February 14: 37 or 5.5%
May 14: 34 or 5.3%
August 14: 32 or 5.1%
November 14: 33 or 5.1%
May 15: 31 or 5.0%
October 15: 33 or 5.1%
September 16: 31 or 5.0%
November 17: 33 or 5.1%
March 18: A "bonus", unexpected test due to other bloods - 30 or 4.9%. I joined the 4s club! I hadn't expected a reduction, having got used to toggling 33<>31<>33<>31 for the last 3 years, literally.
March 19: 27 or 4.6% Another surprising reduction.
February 20: 29 or 4.8%. I'll take that
September 2020 - 31 or 5%. That's in my personal "running range".
Work in progress, but GP hook me off the Diabetes Register towards the end of 2014

Whilst my numbers at diagnosis are much higher then now, there have been many who have stad from a higher starting pointt and done just as well.

For a plethora of very valid reasons, not everyone can reduce their numbers as much as I and plenty others have done, but for me, it was worth giving it a try.

Hi. Always give priority to keeping the carbs down before medication is considered. When low-carb isn't enough, most of us would be started on Metformin which helps a bit and is very safe. There are further meds if needed.

Thank you for all details. Yes, it was random blood test and on fasting it came up as 10.5. I definitely take your experience as inspiration and want to give a go with my diet first. I will be actively reading all foods that helped to one and all in this community
