I was talking to a friend at work today and said that I was going to try a low carb diet. She said, you mean low gi diet. I said I don't think so. What is the difference?

Glycemic index is the area under two hours glucose curve after ingestion of food compared with that of glucose that has 100. GI below 55 is low GI. Low carbs means the carb content of the food overall. Low carbing is best, low GI foods may produce later highs as well as continue rising after 2 hours.
