Fortunately, and thanks to the Newcastle Diet followed by a low carb diet, I have quite good BS control. So I only test twice a day. First thing in the morning and then before evening meal. Just for peace of mind.
I do some times test before and after meals again just for peace of mind.

A lot will depend on how long the person answering has been diagnosed. Once you know what you can and cannot eat safely, depending on your testing results, then most of us do not need to test as much unless we are ill, are trying new foods, have had to introduce new non related medications.

I might have a day of testing once a month, If I am ill then maybe for 2-3 days, if I introduce something new then will test before and after that meal and before the next meal.

Is there any guideline on what the doctors should recommend. My doc has recommended 3-4 a day which I am personally finding a little difficult to follow

6 times a day....I could probably do less but I just don't feel right if I don't test that way. I think it's a confidence thing....need to know I am doing things right and keeping BG low

Hey Gezzabelle..How long have you been testing at this frequency? Are you also on insulin?
Only a few weeks. I am not on any medication and am trying to tackle it with diet and exercise. Checking so often is a learning curve for me to see which foods spike my BG Eating very low carb and higher protein and fat. It is just as well I did check so often as I seem to be unable to tolerate too much protein without a big jump in bg and would have gone on eating far too much thinking it was okay

When I first diagnosed, I tested up to 10 times a day (On waking and before, 1 hour after, 2 hours after each meal and occasionally 3 hours after eating and just before going to bed). However, I now have my blood under much better control and have a good idea of what does and doesn't affect me so probably test 4 times each day (first thing and 2 hours after breakfast, lunch and dinner). I'll test more if I'm eating something new

It depends.

On a day when I'm eating familiar, trusted foods in the usual quantities, then I don't waste strips testing at all. But while I was learning, I tested 6 times a day ish. On days when I'm eating new, different foods, or I want to avoid temptation, I might test up to 10 times.

This means I may only test one or two days a fortnight, except for my fasting BG tests, which I intend to do daily, and achieve about 4 days a week.

I test for lows as well as highs, and when tired or stressed too. Stress makes me hypo, and the fear of hypos make me stressed.

I don't test my blood sugar as such, I test what food and stuff do it. I only test when I have a question to ask. Am diet controlled, so mostly test foods but do that thoroughly when needed.

I'm still learning so 6 times a day for me. Out of bed 1, before lunch 1, after lunch 1, before dinner 1, after dinner 1 and before bed 1. My fingers are full of tiny dots at this moment. I also found out it's a lot less painful on my pinkie and ring finger.

I test 3-4 times a day. My PCP (GP) recommended FBS only, but I am still testing when I try out a new food or "feel" like it might be higher than usual.
