give a rise in a reading? I deceided to see what would happen if I ate very few carbs yesterday to see what difference it would make to my readings. My sugars through yesterday were staying between 5 and 5.9 and yesterday evening my last meal was just some hard boiled eggs with some mayo and a sprinkling of dry parmasan cheese ( the stuff you put over pasta). This morning my fasting result was 7.7, so now I am baffled as to how eggs and mayo made it rise.

I was drinking some sugar free Volvic touch of strawberry and that only has suralose and ace k for sweeteners.

I known 7.7 is nothing to be really worried about but I can't understand how it jumped from 5.2 before my last meal yesterday to 7.7 this morning. I did wash my hands before I took the reading also.

Can too much protien effect it?

Are there any other factors that can effect a reading?

Protien can raise the blood sugar levels, but normally very slowly over a period of time..

The raise you've experience is more likely due to your natural cycle than any food you ate... All your hormones this includes how much the liver delivers glucose into our blood, flutuate durning a 24 hour period... The lowest ebb of this is normally around 2-3am Then they start to raise again, the wake up and get ready for the day... The liver dribbles more glucose into the blood stream so that you've got some energy/fuel available.. Most people experience very littel difference but others can have a more dramatic increase...

Some times if the levels are quite high (you need to compare with what the bedtime level was) and this isn't a normal occurance, then it could indicate that your bg, has dropped very low over-night (hypo range) and the body has responded with a liver dump to correct this, with this though you would expect to be quite a difference on the waking BG...

As it seems that your's is only around a 2mmol/l difference is probably just a natural raise to get you up and going
