Prediabetes What readings am I aiming for? / What diet plan?

Good morning all.

I’m told I’m pre diabetic and now have 2 meters (Home and Work) and have been doing my best to balance a diet that helps Pre Diabetes, Raised Cholesterol and Gout (Joy ).

It’s really quite a challenge as foods good for one are not good for the other and visa versa. I visualise it as a triangular piece of card balancing on the tip of a pencil with the aim of keeping it level.

Q1
As a new readings taker, what are the levels I’m aiming for before and after food?

Q2
Does anyone have any helpful hints with a foods list bearing in mind the triangle?

Thanks in advance

Steve

Welcome to this wonderful, knowledgable forum! Have a good look around. Information abound !

4-7 is the standard for bg levels and not higher than 2mmol after meals. I prefer mine around 5. But we all have different goals.

Gout can be from excess protein. Lchf is not high protein. The standard recommendation is .8-1 G protein per kg LEAN body mass. Many have seen gout symptoms subside after reducing protein to those standards.

Personally, I get gout like symptoms ( arthritis ) from pumpkin seeds and nightshade vegetables which are well known to cause arthritis. Nightshades are tomato, potoato ( not sweet potato) eggplant and all forms of peppers. As well as dairy. Boo, I love cheese. Sometimes it’s just worth it ! Like now, while I’m not sleeping and I should be. Dang hormones

Q1. You aim for anything under 7.8 ... the lower the better and that's 2 hours after eating. Beforehand (first mouthful) can start anywhere though 4s and 5s are fine

Q2 Read the forums .... a LOT .... no pasta, no starchy foods, little bread, most fruit, (PLENTY of above ground veg) no sugars (drinks especially), very few carbs, meat and fish and poultry OK

As I said, read, then after you've done that, come back .... way too many answers that'd take a week to compile and respond. Test often, keep records of what you've consumed and what results you record

One final point. You're standing on a precipice. Be very VERY careful You do NOT wanna be a diabetic
