Type 2 What should bloods be?

Hi, my mums been recently diagnosed with type 2. We’ve got the one touch blood glucose machine to measure the bloods.

What should her bloods be? Her first reading was 20.4, we’ve managed to get that down. Her bloods now averaging 9s/11s. She’s completely changed her diet also, no sugar and rarely any carbs.

Just a bit lost with the whole thing and to be honest, the nurses and doctors haven’t really explained anything or what we should really. Any advice would be great thanks!

Hi @Rurbo,

Welcome to the forum.

It's absolutely wonderful that you're helping your mother to get through this. As you probably realize readings between 9 and 11 are loads better than readings in the 20+ range. So, really well done.

Truly normal readings would probably be in the range of 4 to 8. Based on experience, it may take a couple of weeks/months for readings to get into the normal range on a low carb diet.

How long's your mother been on low carb? What's a typical day of eating like? What type of foods does your mother miss most? Maybe we can help with suggestions?

Thanks for replying. My mums feeling well, she didn’t have any of the normal diabetes symptoms. She was just getting routine checks done because of weight loss which turned out to be caused by type 2.

Her diets quite good actually. Breakfast shes have cereal like all bran or eggs. Lunch she sticks to salads and soup and for dinner it’s mainly fish and veg.

She’s just been diagnosed last week so still a bit of shock for her. She loves yoghurts so I think she’ll find that tough and of course the sugar in her coffees lol

Thanks for the info!

Hugs to your mum. This must be quite difficult to get her mind wrapped around -- especially having had no symptoms and finding out unexpectedly. So, having lowered blood sugars by around 10 mmol in such a short time is quite an achievement.

Her diet sounds really good, though eggs in the morning are probably way better than all bran (all cereals are generally high in carbs and tend to elevate blood sugars -- especially in the morning when we tend to be most insulin resistant). Maybe, she could have yoghurt instead -- especially as she misses this. Plain Greek (or Greek style) or any other type of plain full fat yoghurt work well on a low carb diet, maybe with fresh or frozen berries (strawberries, raspberries, blackberries) or nuts/seeds/unsweetened coconut flakes. As sweetener, many of us use erythritol (stevia or monkfruit sweetener also work well, depending on which one your mother prefers). They all have close to zero impact on blood sugar levels. All other foods sound perfect to me.

Btw, many of us have learned which foods work for us by measuring blood sugar levels right before eating and two hours after the first bite. The rise should be no more than 2 mmol between the two readings.

From the sound of it, your mother will have this licked in no time.
