It was my birthday yesterday and we went out for a meal and i had 2 half largers and I testing my sugar and it was 7.4 after I had eaten so I thought well because I have been drinking i'll leave my quick acting because I was scared of dropping low. We went to the pub afterwards and I started drinking wine and i started to feel quite drunk but I still knew what I was doing. I got home and testing my sugar and it was 16.4 and again I was scared of dropping low because of the alcohol so I went to bed and I didn't take my lantus but I ate something. Woke up this morning and I am 18.4 and a bit hungover lol. Should I take my lantus this morning as I didn't take it last night and my quick acting insulin as well? normally I do take my lantus before bed so do I still need to do it tonight as normal if I do it this morning?

Hi Jodie,

You were right to be cautious about your insulin last night. Alcohol can lower your blood sugar dramatically and usually after an initial high. However, I would have advised you to take you lantus last night but not to correct your high with short acting insulin.
Nevermind. Take your lantus now. Otherwise you will be high all day. You could then take it again tomorrow. If you want to carry on taking it at night before bed, just take half of it now. Keep an eye on your BS today as it will probably run high-but hopefully not as high as not taking it at all!
Correct your high with your short acting insulin but remember to eat something in half an hour or so. Sometimes when I've drank the day before, I can wake up with a high reading but then it drops half way through the morning.
Keep testing every couple of hours or so. Your hangover might be worse for it!

Happy birthday for yesterday and remember not to be too hard on yourself for the ****** readings. After all, it was your birthday and you're allowed to enjoy yourself (next time just take your lantus before you go to bed-NOT your short acting)
