Hi just wondering what is the best time to do a fasting test as i get up quite early every morning usually around 5 15 but i dont usually have my breakfast untill my 10 am break should i have breakfast before i go to work then just have a small snack at my break time? thanks

Hi Gally, you can of course test both times if you get free strips, but I would think the before breakfast one will actually tell you the most because you can compare that to the + 2 hour reading. I test 'first thing' from time to time but that can be distorted by dawn phenomenon (have you heard of that?)

Hi again fraddycat your being very helpful to me  yes i have heard of it its the glucose dump thing isnt it? how soon before eating do i test
thanks again

I've got my helpful head on today! I test a few minutes before I eat - but I'm no expert, other people might say something else. The + 2 hours is fairly straightforward

I expect if you are consistent it would not be a problem, but I think your reading before eating will be at its lowest just before you eat, so this is effectively a fasting reading.

Hi. I personally avoid a morning fasting test as there are limitations in what it can tell you due to varying liver dumps. I tend to test 2 hours after a main meal which guides me on which foods affect me most. BTW this is why a fasting test for diabetes diagnosis can be a bit inaccurate depending on the fasting time; something a phlebotomist once told me and which makes sense.
