Hi I am type 2 diabetes and on 4 tabs a day, I have been naughty lately and have been eating
sweet things, but now have decided to cut down, Can I have 90% Dark Chocolate
and also am I allowed to have Spelt & Rye bread. also when i feel peckish what can I eat
to get over this problem.

HI Elaine

The only way to find out about the spelt and Rye bread, is to test to see how it impacts on your BG's, testing at one hour and two hour after you eaten (the one hour test to see if it spikes high before dropping back at the two hour) then depeding on your results, it may be that you'll fine, but perhaps it may turn out that you have quite a high spike.. Options then would to either to stick it on the 'NO' list of foods.. or perhaps seeing if having a smaller portion of it, resolves the spiking..

As to foods for those peekish moments

Look for carb free type's of foods or that have very small amount of carbs..

Some nuts, perhaps some cheese, even sugar free jelly with a dollop of cream etc

Other ensure that it has either a small amount of carbs or slow burning carbs (this is where the GI diet index load can be helpful)

I do often enjoy Tucks topped with cheese, as these have very low amount of carbs around about 3g's worth if I remember rightly off hand..

ela63,

The 90% Dark Chocolate is a excellent substitute for sweeter chocolate. I like the Moser Roth 85% Dark Chocolate from Aldi, there are five 25g bars, and each one having only 5.4g of carbs per bar, and yes its absolutely delicious! :D

Hello Elaine. :)

Whilst it is nice to have the occasional treat it can often be the start of the slippery slope so it is better/safer to cultivate a savoury approach to nibbles.

There are many veggie nibbles like peppers, mushrooms, celery, carrot sticks and cucumber which can be even nicer if dipped into some garlic mayonnaise and hard boiled egg is also nice this way. Small pieces of cheese or lean meat can help with the hunger pangs too as can drinking bouillon. You could also have small pieces of fruit if only sweet will do.

It is an addiction really and you just have to be tough!
