I had HbA1c of 113 two years ago with fasting BG about 8.5 and changed to eating less carbohydrate and at that time stopped potatoes, sweet potatoes, crisps, muesli, grapes, mangoes, dates, dairy yogurt, supermarket bread, bananas, chocolate, cake, biscuits, crackers, milk and other foods high in carbohydrate. My GP prescribed metformin and later dapagliflozin, but I was not willing to just maintain my health, so a year ago I stopped taking medications and really concentrated on dietary changes, fasting, exercise, weight loss, better sleep and stopped drinking alcohol. Lately, fingerstick tests are giving fasting levels of 4.6 and my CGM shows BG spikes are small and are easily managed. Supporting my body to recover from carbohydrate abuse for years has become a way of life, but fairly suddenly over the past few months my BG average has fallen and after meals my BG now falls rapidly once digestion is fairly complete. I have asked for HbA1c and lipid tests in December to see if my average BG has gone lower. Another change is that alcohol no longer elevates my BG for 2 to 3 days, although I drink in moderation and not daily; I never drank much more than I do now. I have lately reintroduced higher carbohydrate foods and use the CGM to catch any foods that cause larger spikes.
