What type of Diabetes do I have?

Hi Everyone,

I was diagnosed back in Jan 06 with diabetes type11, I was on 4 Metformin a day. For some reason since October 08 my sugars started to get really high, the highest was 34, My GP put me on extra meds 4 Gliclazide, however, my blood sugars still will not go down, they averaged out between 20 and 13, then my GP advised to take insulin as well as the meds, my GP has gradually increased the insulin units each week at present I take 18 units morning and 16 units early evening, my sugars are now averaging between 10 and 13. I take my readings 3 times a day.

Meds now are 4 x metformin, 4 x gliclazide and 18 units insulin morning and 16 units early evening.

My question - Is my diabetes still referred to as having Type11 ?

Many thanks for your help.

It could be you are type1. ask your doctor if he will do a c-peptide test, which will make the position a bit clearer. there isn't a simple test to sort it out.
However. Please. If you feel very unwell and find you have high blood sugar. get yourself to the casualty department and tell them you are diabetic.

Thanks hanadr,

I have been feeling rotton since October, some days are easier than others to cope. I am seeing the GP weekly my next visit is Tuesday this week, I will definately mention having the c-peptide test.

When I had the reading of 34 the GP did nothing, just said that is high, I was so tired and unwell, oh well I got over it, just slept and took the meds.

Lets see what he says about having this test done. I will let you know.

Thanks :)

you still may have type 2, are u overweight? do u eat a lot of carbs?

Hiya,
Have you ever been asked to check your ketones? You can buy wee sticks at the chemist if your Dr won't prescribe them. Anything over a trace of ketones, combined with a high blood sugar, needs informed medical attention immediately. If you are indeed a Type 1, you are at risk of diabetic ketoaciosis (DKA), which is a medical emergency. Symptoms of DKA iclude lethargy, stomach pains, nausea, vomiting, deep sighing breathing, a 'pear drop' smell on the breath, bad headache, together with extreme thirst and weeing.

Please let us know how you get on.

HI totsy,

Thank you for your reply, yes I am overweight, I have tried dieting and the sugar levels remained very high, limited intake of carbs, no sugar etc, I then found I was starving and needed food badly, so tried the diet thing, I went on this strict diet for 4 weeks wrote down everything, but felt ill doing it, strange too as the weight was not coming off!!!!!! wierd. The GP checked my diet chart and could see and commented I was not over eating or eating things I shouldnt. This is when he decided to go down the route of taking more meds and insulin.

Since then I still do not over eat, it may be a combination of things due to my other health issues.

I will see what the GP says on Tuesday.

Hi Sue,

Thanks for your reply also, no my ketones have not been checked. I will get the stick tomorrow, although my husband did try and get one from the chemist before and they would not give him one, they said I have to ask the GP.

The symptoms you describe are what I am experiencing. I checked my sugars again tonight and they are 18.7 this cant be right, I am taking all the meds and insulin. My symptoms are eyes blurry, tiredness, lower stomach pains not all the time but now and then, bad headaches, thirsty and weeing, mouth very dry, not had the vomiting.

I will do the stick tomorrow if I can get one, I do have an appointment tuesday to see the GP again.

I will definately let you know how I get on.

Hi Fran,

Some chemists get a bit above themselves and will not sell the Ketostix, it would be worth tryng another one. Or take a sample up to your GP's surgery and ask them to dip stick test it for ketones, they can easily do that. Keep taking your insulin, as it is a relative lack of insulin that causes DKA. You can become critically ill in just a few hours once DKA really takes hold, so if you become worse, or manage to test your ketones and have more than a trace (especially combined with a blood glucose in double digits), please get medical help urgently - don't wait for your Tuesday appt with the GP.
Looking forward to hearing from you later.
Best wishes
Sue

Hi Sue,

Thank you for your reply, I managed to get the Ketostix and the test showed normal :)

Seen the GP and he has decided to increase the insulin to 22 units morning and 20 units evening, plus taking 4 x metformin and 4 x gliclacide and 1 simvastatin a day.

I also asked is my diabetes type 2 and he replied yes.

Will be seeing him again in a couple of weeks.

After viewing your forum I can see some really helpful tips and recipes to help control my weight.

Thank you for all your support and help. Have fantastic week

Hi Fran,
I'm relieved to hear you didn't have ketones and feel happier now. You will find loads of good info on the forum about diet etc, so keep reading and asking questions - there is always someone who can help out. Thanks for letting us know.
All the best
