What would the diagnosis be

Hi guys, i have all the usual synmptoms... frequent urination, constant hunger, constabnt thirst, sometimes blurred vision but now here comes the tricky part....

As i eat already due to yeast infections, foods which contain 0 sugar and very limited carbs my blood sugars never really go high, so my Hba1C is within range, and my fasting glucose (5.4) is within range as im not eating anything to raise my blood sugars BUT if i were to eat foods containing alot of sugars/carbs then my blood Glucose SPIKES rather quite high and then drops back.

So its the spikes im mainly worried about as this isnt normal and causing quite a few diabates symptoms but i think it will be hard for a diagnosis ?

My gtt even showed this with a big spike 30 mins into the test with a 12.1 mmnol but at the 2 hour mark it had dropped back down to 7.1 mmnol.

Any thoughts or similar experiences ?

Thanks

Hi

From your previous postings, the situation concerning your blood sugars may be being impacted by treatment for other medical problems. Have you tested your BG levels after eating to see if you are producing the same spikes that you experienced in your GTT?

Have you discussed your situation with your GP and, if necessary, requested a consultant referral?

Regards

Doug

Hi,

Everyone spikes after eating, the defining factor generally for diabetes is how high, and how long it takes to come down. Only your doctor can tell you what is going on. Generally though people don't tend to get standard diabetes symptoms with an HbA1c that is low - post meal spikes don't usually do it. I think Doug is spot on that you need a referral or further discussion to get to the bottom of why you feel like this. Constant high blood sugars very frequently go along with yeast infections, though.

Yeh i feel the Hydrcortisone is having an impact in my blood sugars most definately, its just that i still need to take it at the moment.

Yes i have tested on my kit after eating carbs/sugars and i get the exact same increase in blood sugar and symptoms (mainly i have to pee more).

My next gp appointment is in over a weeks time, i will most defiainetly discuss everything with my doc, i just want as much information as possible to take along with my appointment so i can get the best help.

Regarding the consultant referal, is this to an endocrinologist ? Or is it more to a diabetic nurse ? Is there a "good" doctors list for a referal or are all endocrinologist respected in the diabates field (as this isnt the case in the thyroid department)

Thanks
Steve

Hi, would you say spikes of 10 mnol + from only a few grams of sugar/carbs is high ? and yeh its wierd i have normal Hba1C but crazy diabates symptoms which im thinking can be because i eat very restricted diet already. Lets hope i can get to the bottom of it.

Thanks

Wouldn't disagree with anything everyone has said, and you do need a proper diagnosis. However, a spike of 10+ is high after limited carbs, and a GTT over 11.1 is normally taken as indicative of diabetes as far as I know. It could well be that you're diabetic but your figures are all low because of your diet. However, as has been said, those spikes wouldn't normally give the symptons you refer to.
