Hello

I know you are not doctors but just a few questions. I have had certain symptoms for the best part of a year and after quitting smoking some 8 weeks ago I feel they have gotten worse. I have spoke to my GP twice regarding this in the past year but have been told it is unlikely to be diabetes as I am so slim........
Height: 5ft 6.7"
Weight: 8st7lb (3lb increase since quitting smoking)
Age: 31

Symptoms:
Urinating frequently (cant go all night without going)
Urine has strong sweet smell (sorry gross!!)
Itchy skin (this has increased since quit)
Very dry mouth and constant thirst
Occasional blurring of vision (drinking cola usually gets rid of it)
Aggitated and Irratated
So tired......And I mean I just want to lie down and sleep (im getting between 8-10hrs), my eyes feel heavy lol.

Ok so after talking to a friend she told me to test my BS levels for a few weeks (my friends daughter has type 1 so Im used to doing it) so I bought a Accu-check aviva nano and some strips yesterday. I have tested this morning for a fasting result, then 1hour and 2 hours after breakfast. What I want to know is apart from my morning (fast) testing when else would I be best testing? Say 2 hours after starting dinner? And should I test when I feel odd (like all angry for nothing) and note that as an extra? How long should I do fasting BS to get a average result?

Sorry for all the questions but would like to rule it out as being a problem and my results from what i can gather from this morning are ok although fasting result are on the high side. I know that quitting smoking will affect my BS although I would have expected them to settle after 8 weeks!

Fasting result this morning : 8.7
Breakfast 2 slices wholewheat toast/butter/yoghurt/banana/water
1hr after breakfast: 6.6
2hrs after breakfast: 7.8

Thank you

Hi AngelaM

I am slim and I'm type 2. As a newly diagnosed person, I am not as well informed as others on here - but I think that your fasting result seems too high.( which is exactly what I suffer from ).

I think that might be a wake up call that you could be pre diabetic or have what they call Impaired fasting Glycaemia. It looks like your symptoms need addressing, cos if its not Type 2 or pre diabetes , SOMETHING is obviously going on. I was told that some symptoms of type 2 can also be indicative of thyroid function problems. So I think you just have to go back and get a second opinion. It's not easy living with those symptoms.

Good luck

Thanks Cathy, i have made another app at docs for 3 weeks time so I shall just continue taking my morning bloods and recording it to see if there is anything to note. They took blood from me about a year ago for an all round test and said that the results came back "fine" Im not sure what I was even tested for, the last few times I have been at the docs I have got the duty doctor so I have asked to see my own doctor this time, shall wait and see what they say this time

Hi Angela

I wouldn't normally advocate regular self testing without a definite diagnosis, better to get it checked by the GP. What I would say though is if you are going to continue to test, you test 2 hours after meals. I think this gives a better picture of what levels are doing.

Anybody else agree?

Personally, i can't see the point in testing at the moment. They'll not take the results for diagnosis, and will probably say angelam might not have done them right if they're used to make a point. It's very simple for the doctor really - at the appointment, and no harm will come between now and then, he should organise an HbA1c test. This test angela is another simple blood test, but is totally different to the sort of test you do on your meter. It shows how your blood glucose has been behaving over the last month or so. It is normally pretty definitive of diabetes/non diabetes. Just shout and insist on one being done.
Good luck!

A non-diabetic blood glucose doesn't stray far from 5mmol/l for any length of time. thus if you record numbers above this [especially above 7] and have the symptoms you describe, the chances are you are diabetic. As to your weight
Diabetes is NOT caused by overwweight[that's a common myth] although there is a link. just as not all overweight or obese people develop diabetes, not all diabetics are overweight.
Do ask your doctor to check again. If he/she doesn't want to, say you'd like to see someone else. If you don't have it, I'm pleased for you, but if you do it needs to be diagnosed.
