The audits also show that the blood glucose of younger patients across the UK is not being managed effectively, with average blood glucose levels found to be higher in patients aged 21-40 (mean 8.5%) vs the 61 -80 age group (mean 7.8%) - both well above recommended targets.
Over 11 years, the total mean (SD) HbA1c was 9.19% (1.3). Only 3.4% of patients achieved an average HbA1c of <7% during the study period, and 80% of patients had average HbA1c levels of >8%.
