Whats the point is it worth it (Diabetes reviews)

I have a review in 2weeks time I'm type 2nd control my diabetes with diet + execise. Doctors won't give me test strips on prec because I don't need them nurse agrees with him so I ended up buying my own like most people on this forum. My last HbA1c (6 months ago) I got down to 5.6 very happy about that but now I'm told the latest blood tests I have just had done I didn't need a HbA1c or a blood glucose test just a kidney, liver and cholesterol test. As you can gather I am really peeved off about this because if they don't do the HbA1c or Glucose test how on earth do they know how I am doing especially as I don't need strips because they will be monitoring me grrrr anoying or what :x
 
Is it possible for you to either change your doctor or get refered to a hospital diabetes clinic ?

Once a diabetic always a diabetic and you do need the tests regularly.
 
Don't know but they know I am not to pleased, I will have it out with them when I am face to face its just so annoying that they made a big deal of it to start with then seem to have lost interest :evil:
 
Plain and simple..... they are not allowing you test strips......then they won't give you an HbA1c test. How do they expect you or them to know what state your Diabetes levels are...do they have a Crystal Ball perhaps...... :twisted:

If it was me I would see the GP and ask the question. "How am I supposed to know if what I am doing is right and how do they expect me to control my Diabetes if they won't provide the tools or the means to check my Bg and HbA1c readings."

It's like asking you to drive blindfolded........madness ! Polite but firm argument is the way forward and if that fails I would complain to the Practice Manager and if needs be the local PCT. You should be treated better than this.

This is common with the majority of docs now.
When I tackled the nurse who checks me every 6months she showed me a notice that was to be sent out to all NHS docs that T2 are being stopped from having any strips or sharps. That was at least 18myhs ago so now with the crunch time in process they are hardly likely to change their minds!
The whole thing, I was told is for you to make sure that you keep to a correct diet! If I had not bought my own equipment I wouldn't be aware of the things that send me hyper. However, even my sister who has been db for at least 12 years has had her's stopped as well.

I have found a little gentle persuasion can go a loooooong way ! If you don't ask....you don't get. Simples. :wink:

Thanks for the input I have calmed down today a bit but still annoyed, can't see a doc for 6 days fully booked unless its an emergency by which time I will be having my review with the practice diabetes nurse anyway so i will try to get her to see sense I think. I am not annoyed over the strips after seeing that most people on type 2 are in the same boat I don't mind but to have a review without the HbA1c or even a BG that really annoyed me :cry: Still wait and see
 
How often do you have a diabetes review? The diabetes nurse at my surgery usually saw me for a review about every 9- 10 months but now she says she will see me at 6 months but she does some tests but not all of them and then the next 6 months she does the ones she didn't do before. I am thinking that if she only does the hba1c at one of the reviews then I will have to wait for a whole year for the hba1c test result. I am susposed to have the next review next month. Last time I waited 10 months for a review and only had one then because I saw the doctor for something non diabetes related and she told me I was due a review in January and as I did not get a letter to make an appointment in January I went to the receptionist and booked myself an appointment for the review with the nurse. I am wondering if it is now acceptable to take an hb1ac test annually?

Was seen last October (Shingles this is when I was told I had high BG, liver test and kidney test) had 3 more BG tests and took till December before they confirmed I was Diabetic (this seems the norm so happy there) It was the nurse who told me basically it went; "ah Mr OBrien how are u today. Oh by the way looking at all the blood tests you've had you're Diabetic how do you feel about that?"
So scared the **** out of me because obviously I had an idea with all the tests I had gone though, I asked about monitoring she said no need to worry, now I have been diagnosed they will monitor the situation, and would I like to try diet control, answer to that was OK I will give that a go. So HbA1c taken to get me a start level it was 7.2 not too bad but she wanted a look in February to make sure things were going along OK, nothing heard from them by end of Jan so I badgered her and got my tests in mid Feb result 5.6 (did a lot of testing with the kit the chemist gave me for free and some strips I bought) I was really happy about that, so now she said because I had got to grips with it she would see me in 6 months and have another look. This is only my 3rd blood testing since being diagnosed hence me being really annoyed about the lack of BG or HbA1c I would have thought being a newish case more care would have been taken to make sure I do not get complications or make sure I am doing things right :evil:
 
I dare say in the current economic mess we are in it will get even harder for us T2 folks to get strips. Not good.
