What's your thoughts on saccharine..

I know aspartame is known as the sweet poison, but not seen much on saccharine, other than it may have insulin stimulation properties, but little else.
What do you know about it?
 
Not sure about saccharine in particular but I do believe that overdoing artificial sweeteners in general can play havoc with healthy gut bacteria which can in turn (apparently) be bad for bs levels so I try to limit my consumption of all of them. I chew dental gum after meals & add a dash of diet tonic to my gin & soda but thats about my limit.

I find that artafital sweetners alter the taste of a cup of tea, or coffee, so instead of adding them I just use 1/2 of my useual sugar amount, which is 1 teaspoonful, at first I noticed the differance in taste, but it never took long for me to get use to the difference. So I guess you have to decide if the adverse things that come with using artaficial sweetners, is worth the change from a small amount of natural white sugar, or not. Stemar, (Downunder)
 
I use Candarel for baking and in my coffee ....... no sweetner in tea is why I drink alot of it
 
I'm not a fan of Saccharin. I really don't like the flavour.
 
I find that artificial sweeteners make me want to eat sweet things and thus give me carb cravings, so I avoid them just as I avoid carbs. I drink coffee without sweetener, and for pudding I have double cream with nuts and 80% chocolate, whipped cream with cocoa powder and a drop of vanilla essence, or chocolate ganache (made by bringing double cream just to the boil, pouring it over broken-up chocolate and stirring) layered with whipped cream. (Yes, double cream is a bit of a leitmotif.)

I do grow stevia. I've tried using it in puddings and drinks, but the way I like it best is chopped into salad together with other herbs.

Hi Tim,
I can really relate to you!!! As when I was first told I had Type 2 Diabetes, my BGL's were pretty high. I was advised to get and artaficial sweetner but when I tried it I just couldn't get use too the taste at all, so I went back to white sugar only 1/2 what I use too have and if I stick to this it doesn't have a big impact on my BGL's. So as long as you have it in moderation it hould be okay, but just remember everyone is an individual and should use this only if it works for them.

Friends, ever since I was diagnosed type 2, I've stopped using sugar with coffee and tea. I don't need sugar, therefore I don't need sweeteners, as I don't like the aftertaste - or expense!

Hi Everyone,

First, I hope this finds everyone on the positive end of their BGL's, as that's the important thing with this disease!!! Well I don't trust artifical sweetners, as over the years I've heard and read a lot of adverse publicity, the main point of concern is their suspected cause of some relationship to the underlying cause for some cancers, plus their affect on our bodies insulin creation and the way they affect the taste of a cup of tea, or coffee. So I feel that all these adverse affects just create a cause for concern on a major scale. But please remember, this is only my opinion and each of you should see how they affect your BGL's and if you notice any other changes in the taste of the things you use it in, before you decide wether, or not too use artifical sweetners, so good luck in managing your disease, Okay!!!

Just to keep things clear, stevia isn't an artificial sweetener, unlike aspartame etc., so worries about artificial sweeteners shouldn't affect one's decision whether to use stevia.

Stevia ans erythritol are two "natural" sweeteners that seem to be the ones most recommend for diabetics. They have no/very few carbs or calories. I find Stevia does have an aftertaste though if used in higher quantities.

I avoid the artificial ones like the plague.

Happy to take stevia and erythritol. No adverse reactions (yet) although I find that stevia sometimes leaves a bitter aftertaste.

I hope your all doing well, when I was first diagnosed with my Type 2 problem I was a keen coffee drinker (10 - 15) cups a day. But because I was told I could get on top of this if I just stopped sugatered several of my food choices, I jumpped in whole heartedly. I tried several artificial sweetners, but they all left a really terrible after taste in my mouth after having a cupper, so I gave them all the flick, cut down my daily intake of coffee to 4 cups a day (B, L, D, & S) with 1 level teaspoon of white sugar in each, the result has been suitable for me, as I'm able to manage my BGL'S as long as I eat the right foods along with the coffee. Not many people I know who also have Type 2 like artificial sweetners, but too each their own as what's good for me may not be for you, so it comes down to trial and error until you get it right for yourself.

Has anyone tried the one they do in lidl, the tablet not the granulated.
I use the tablet one, even use it when baking etc by dissolving in a little warm water. They are made up of cyclamates & saccharine 1200 approx in a dispenser, for £1.38.
 
I avoid artificial sweetners, but do occasionally use DaVinci SF syrup. It is sweetened with Splenda.

Stevia is my sweetner of choice.
 
This week I was informed that in 2003 a consultant wrote a letter to GP that It was likely that I was allergic to aspartame and sweeteners. It never got put on my notes and I was never told.

I have had 15 years (at least) of some quite awful health concerns and at other times the health concerns have disappeared. Hubby and I can directly link the times of bad illness and good health to times when I have not ate "sugar free chewing gum",not had diet ginger beer or diet coke or indeed not done own baking with sweeteners.

Now I have been informed of this "aspartame" "sweetener" link perhaps I can now get better health all the time.

Makes me wonder how many other people can get diagnosed with fibromyalgia and other illnesses, have never believed the diagnosis' and would be able to link to sweeteners.

I knew saccharin and aspartame etc had links to Cancer but was never fully aware that items such as restless legs, numbness in limbs, fibromyalgia etc was also listed as symptoms of being allergic to aspartame.
 
I don't use the stuff but it's in loads of stuff - even breakfast cereals. If it's consumed like lots of other stuff we bung in our mouths, it gets completely broken down into by-products. In this case things like phenylalanine, aspartic acid and methanol. If you have phenylketonuria (PKU), a genetic disorder where the body cannot break down phenylalanine (you get this in things like milk, eggs and meat) then you should probably not have it.

Like lots of "artificial foods" there will be loads of urban myths, falsehoods and hearsays knocking about by instant experts. I don't know but if it scares you then avoid I guess.
