Lack of choice of insulin for newly diagnosed patients.
Dog owners who let their dogs poop in the street-a hazard for most, but worse if you're visually impaired!

Hi
My doc recommended that I try stopping eating bread as I've got IBS and the pain is intolerable sometimes. She also prescribed a tab to stop the bowel spasms-sorry that sounds revolting!
I recently changed insulins and for the first time in years feel I have got control over my diet, and how much I eat, my BS were so unpredictable before, and I couldn't take anything else on board.
Anyway I've decided to follow my GPs advice and switch to a wheat-free diet- been on it 3 days.
Is there anyone on this sort of diet who can offer me any tips or advice, particularly on eating out and out-and-about lunches and snacks.
Thanks
Jus

My irritable guts stopped when I stopped wheat. I didn't realise wheat was the problem till I started Atkins 5 years ago and realised I had stopped eating it too.

Eating out can be problem. It's fine in expensive restaurants where you can have meat/fish and veg/salads. If you don't want potatoes or rice or plain pasta you can order extra veg instead.

The problem is cheaper places eg canteens and garden centres and cafes. These places have a heavy wheat/bread/panini bias and you end up with soups, (minus the roll) and baked potatoes if you are lucky. In pizza hut the only thing I can eat is the chicken wings and the caesar salad.

When it comes to sauces you really need to ask the waiter to find out from the chef which are wheat free.

TBH - why hasnt he referred you to a dietitian - the obvious things are easy to avoid but wheat may be in things and it isnt obviuos.
IBS is a complex problem and wheat can sometimes be a culprit but not always - actually alot of patients find it is green leafy veg, tuna, nuts , pineapple and a lot of other foods.

probiotics often help too and if you are one of those who gets bloated Pilates may help because some recent research has shown that it is aggraveted by poor muscle tone. I have been encouraging people to try this so will ahve to wait and see but i think exercise def helps it anyway.

I usually get people to do a food and symptom diary first and then experiment but sometimes we might go straight for an exlusion diet.
Stress is also a factor for a lot of people but with IBS everyone has different symptoms .

Hi,
Thanks for the advice I probably will go back to my doctor and discuss it some more. I've not felt bloated since I've been wheat free, but can't say I feel great either. Maybe I need some more tests.
luckily my GP is very good, I reckon she'll point me in the right direction.

one thing please dont go and have any silly allergy tests - they are done by quacks . I went to one without telling her what i do she said I have multiple allergies when clearly i do not apart from a reall alergy to anchoves - never picked that up!

Hi,
I appreciate that, I do know that there are many "quacks" out there, and unfortunately been at their mercy! I was more hoping that my GP might be able to refer me to hospital for the tests- do you know if this service is availabl? Thanks for your advice.

Some areas have a consultant who has an interest in IBS - the problem is that often they refer u to a surgical unit - inappropriate. If u lived in nottingham then i went to an IBS update a few weeks ago and the consultant was brill! The problem with IBS is that often tests show nothing wrong - like a scan, barium enema etc.

You need to see a dietitian who has experience in IBS too .
What was very interesting was that he suggested that those who have the bloating sort of IBS should take up pilates as it may be linked to poor muscle tone. So i have been encouraging people to pilates classes - its good for your back too!

Don't know about pilates, but I do cycle and walk a lot, when I've got the energy. Interesting you mention tuna, I definately have a problem with tuna, found that out years ago. I have been wheat free for almost two weeks, only probs I've had that resulted in pain were a sample of baileys outside a supermarket, (awful gas, acid and pain immediatly afterwards) ryvita I had for lunch today.
Maybe going wheat free's not the complete answer, but it beats being in pain. Do you know if there are any negative affect to health being wheat free?
Thanks
Jus

no its not a problem but i have often found it is a range of foods with no connection at all. One lady we did an elimination diet with was sensitive to pineapple and tuns and there is no logic to that, I think stress has a big part to play too and we all have that!
