Looking out for the postie with my meter and supplies ...

Do I start testing straight away or should I start first thing the next day so that I start with a clean sheet so to speak?

What is the control stuff they mention on the website? I didn't buy any. Should I have?

I started right away. But I was pretty hyperglycemic with some nasty symptoms, so needed to get things under control ASAP. It also take a little while to get familiar with the testing process, so might as well do some fumbling about when it arrives, and face the next morning as a pro :D

You are likely the get the lowest reading of the day just before your evening meal. First thing in the day you have some raised blood sugar due to a liver dump. It doesn't matter when you test, but testing at a consistent time of the day is good. Testing first thing is what many type 2 people do.

Why wait? snatch it out the postmans hands and rip into it and test there and then!

the control solution is just to check the meter is (still) reading correctly, as it's brand new you shouldn't need it. if in a year or 2 the readings seem off you can always order some.

Have the meter by your bed and test first thing in the morning, that will give you your fasting test, test before a meal and then 2hrs after, you don't have to test for every meal, one day do breakfast, the next just lunch and the day after just evening meal. You'll work out what foods/portion sizes are good or not for your BS level.

Here are some tips to help you avoid the mistakes that are often made at first
1 make sure that your hands are well washed rinsed and dried
2 get a large enough drop of blood(too much is better to start with )
3 don't try to force the blood onto the strip just touch with strip to the blood drop and let it draw the blood up
4 don't rush !!
