I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 5 months ago with a blood sugar level of 10.8, I was prescribed one 850mg Metformin tablet per day. I immediately cut out all sugar, white bread etc. from my diet and have lost more than 12kg and gone from a 40 inch to 36 inch waist. I had my blood tested (full blood test) last week and my level was 5.8. I asked my GP if I could now come off medication, but he said I should carry on for another 6 months and try to lose even more weight. My BMI is now 30.1.
I don't like being on medication and would like to get off meds asap. Is my GP right in keeping me on medication?

Welcome John
No one here is qualified to give you medical advice. All I will say is unless you are experiencing intollerable side effects, Metformin will do you no harm, and has other benefits as well. (e.g. It surpresses appetite)

Always consult your Dr regarding any changes to Meds. My dosage has been cut from 1000 to 500, that was done at consultation in the surgery

I am sure you will appreciate that you would benefit from a reduced BMI

Yes I would stay on the metformin until you have lost all the weight you need to lose and then reassess the situation. It helps reduce insulin resistance and so encourages weight loss. I struggle to lose weight without metformin. I was taken off them and begged to go back on them again.
