When to test

I am new to glucose testing having only just got a meter. My levels have between 5 and 7.8 . I bought the meter and teat strips myself so don't want to waste them. I am hoping I can get some from the nurse when I see her again in January. What I want to ask is when are the best times to test? At the moment I was hoping only 2 or 3 times a day to conserve my strips. Advice please. Thanks
 
First thing in the morning before you eat is the best time.However if you want to check up on the effect food is having on you, you need to test before a meal then 2 hours after the meal.If the readings are much the same then that meal is OK and has not sent your blood sugar levels up.
