'Where can I get reliable and honest information - from one

Hi Everyone

I have just moved from diet/exercise to Metformine 850 (3 a day - is that high?). The reason I have had to change is that my average readings went up from 130/140 t0 250/280 over the last 4 weeks.

Any road up - The biggest problem I'm going to have is to tailor my lifestyle to fit the new restrictions.

Being a bit of a social animal - even at 70 - I have enjoyed a gin and tonic in the garden before dinner and several glasses of wine with my dinner - mostly red, followed occasionally by the odd cognac. My Doctor now says - maximum one 'small' glass of red per day - no exceptions and noothing else. I've never had problems with the diet issue and eat very well but carefully, but the thought of not tasting the pleasures of a good wine !!!!!. This is a particular problem as I live in the Cognac region close to Bordeaux - see the problem. My other alcoholic dalliance is with a good beer - or three -(Old Speckled Hen preferred) watching Rugby or Football on the Tele.

Any way - the real purpose of this post is twofold. Firstly to touch base with others with the same interest and/or problems and ,secondly, to ask if anyone knows a good web site where most questions can be answered at the same place and in a logical manner. No disrepect to this site, I'm a new boy, but when I put in a search question I either seem to get 687 possibilities or none.

Your thoughts would be appreciated. Doubtless I'll have dozens more questions.

Cheers for now

Bob

Well Bob,

This is, without a doubt, one of the friendliest sites I have come across. You can always try asking your questions here, we are a friendly bunch and will either be able to answer your questions or point you in the right direction towards finding an answer.

Regards, Tubs.

Hi Bob
Where are you? I ask because you are using mg/dl units

Hi All again

Sorry - my fault, I thought the detail of my post would convey the frustration of the new guy and how I would be seeking to beat the system. Maybe someone has the magic formula - like ' You can drink whatever you like as long as you have your fingers crossed and a soup spoon in your top pocket. I'm being flippant but at the moment I'm struggling to take this all in. For ten years I lived a sensible life with diet and exercise (mostly golf) and suddenly I have to find a new 'style'.

I live in France and thats the measurement they use.

Here are a few specific questions

  • Is more than one 'small' glass of red wine life threatening???

Is 3 times 850mg Metformine a high dose to sart with my readings

What kind of latitude do I have with alcohol. Even on this site I've seen 1 glass a meal is O.K.

Is 1% beer O.K., or even 2% - I can get that. - how about shandy

If you do have 3 glasses of wine and your reading shoots down, say to 3.2 - is a sugar cube the answer

I know I will have loads more questions but for the moment, the answers to these would help.

Reading the questions it sounds like I'm an alcoholic but that simply isn't true. Like when I used to smoke (30 years ago) sometimes it's just social engaement of holding of the glass and chatting.

Thanks again - hope you don't think I'm apain in the Butt.

Provided they are small, you can probably have 2

Metformin only makes you more sensitive to insulin, it doesn't halp you make any more. thus its glucose loweing power is limited

What kind of latitude do I have with alcohol. Even on this site I've seen 1 glass a meal is O.K.
A little isn't going to hurt

Is 1% beer O.K., or even 2% - I can get that. - how about shandy
It's the carb in the beer you really need to worry about. in this light, the lemonade could be more troublesome than the beer

If you do have 3 glasses of wine and your reading shoots down, say to 3.2 - is a sugar cube the answer
3.2 isn't serious. I can function perfectly well down to 2.5. juest wait a bit it will come back up.
What number are you used to operating at? the conversion factor for thenumbers is18. Multiply by 9 then by 2

You are on around the maximum dose of metformin which with your numbers is no bad thing.

Although alcohol and metformin are contraindicated the reaction seems to be rare, many people can get away with a glass or two or even more but BE CAREFUL

Have a good look through the Stickies for some excellent references, some of my favourite newbie sites

As you can see what you need to concentrate on is reducing carbs, hopefully French cuisine should provide many alternatives
