where do I go from here?

For some years now I have experienced increasingly the kind of symptoms which are supposed to suggest diabetes. No matter how much water I drink I feel thirsty and dehydrated a lot of the time; I find myself going to the loo every hour or so (I bought one of those bottle things to help at night and I'm passing over a litre every night - sorry, too much information perhaps); my mouth gets incredibly dry at night. I get tired quickly and unaccountably too. The only thing I can't claim is weight loss!

I've reported this to my GP three times, and each time she has sent me for tests. Each time the results come back negative - no sign of diabetes.

Is she missing something?

I'm not looking for a positive diagnosis, but I friend of mine was told he had type 1 diabetes a few years ago, and he says his life was transformed (positively!) by the treatment.

Any thoughts or comments welcome.

People tend to think diabetes as a cause of excessive thirst, and it often is the first obvious sign of that. However, there are many, many other conditions can cause this (wrongdiagnosis.com lists 115 causes of thirst). The best way of diagnosing diabetes is a "Glucose Tolerance Test" (this consists of having blood taken, then you eat or drink some glucose and finally you have another blood sample a couple of hours later). If you have had one of these and it has come back negative then you can be fairly confident that you don't have diabetes. If you haven't had one of these, then it might be worth asking for one, just to be sure.

Assuming that you don't have diabetes, then all I can suggest is that you hassle your doctor ruthlessly to test for different conditions to get to the root of this. It is probably something minor, but it could be very serious. If it is serious, then the sooner you find out about it the better.
