Hi
I have been diabetic for 16 yrs and very poorly controlled I went through a very difficult period of diagnosis and had a very un supportive team which has put me off dealing with things I go for my eye check ups and go to the gp to have my hba1c checked but have made absolutely no effort to attend a clinic or see a dns in about 7-8 years I know I need to do this and have even wondered if a pump would help I need to get my life back on track and really don't know wher to start can anyone help ? I know that the first step is always the hardest

Hi.

Sorry to hear that you have had an unsupportive team / a bad experience. Mine has certainly varied depending on the area I have been living in.

I suggest if you want to see a diabetes specialist that you trying asking your GP for a referral or advise. I didn't attend any hospital clinics for a while until i asked to go on a carb counting course and then I went onto a pump, so now I go to the hospital about every 6 months and my team there are very helpful. Prior to this I saw just a diabetes nurse at my local doctors surgery, but I' didn't find her helpful.

if you are feeling out of control and considering a pump the best thing to so is go on a carb counting course first as you will need to carb count with a pump and this was also an opportunity for me to see what pumps were available and get some more information (although I'm not sure if all courses will include this aspect). You might also find this type of course helpful in managing your diabetes.

I like my pump and it does help me, but it also required motivation to get it set up. Like on injections I have good days and some not so good, but I do like my pump :-)
