Which Diabetes Is Genetic And Runs In Families??

With my Dad I think Diabetes was just a contributing factor. It was actually Coronary Artery Disease (heart attack) that he died from.
 
My maternal Grand mother had diabetes listed along with about 12 other things on her death certificate.
I don't know about my paternal Grand mother, but when reaching her 80s both legs were amputated below the knee and was basically blind, so it's possible.
None of the next generation, had or has diabetes. to the best of my knowledge I'm the only one in 18 in my generation who has it. Type 2.
 
Whilst there is no history of any type of diabetes in my family, both my mother and father have (different) autoimmune conditions, As autoimmune conditions tend to gather and Type 1 is an autoimmune condition, I wonder if this made me more susceptible to Type 1.
 
I think you are right! I was the only diabetic (Type1) in my family from 1879 till the present. Yet my maternal grandmother was crippled with rheumatoid arthritis and my sister has the same. My father was seriously asthmatic, which affected my brother in his younger years. My daughter is allergic to gluten. As you say, these are all autoimmune conditions and my version of it turned out Type1.
 
For myself there was no-one in my family who was known to have had Type 1 (well not blood related anyways, my great-uncle was T1 but had married into the family - he had the same birthday as me - long since gone now), but there were some thyroid problems present in the family - on both sides I think, so yeah known auto-immune issues but not actually T1 before me
 
My mother in law has type 1, so does my husband and my 7 year old son
 
I totally understand this thread and I like many others was interested in the hereditary angle , there was a suspicion that my grandad had it was never actually diagnosed but did have his both legs amputated above the knee so it’s quite possible , the way I look at it if it is hereditary there’s not a lot I can do about it know and with regard my children I or my ex wives never considered not having children. I probably more than anyone should wary of it but I’m not diabetes treatment has come on leaps and bounds in a relatively short period so personally I think it’s not the burden it use to be ! But that’s just me I don’t stress or worry which I’ve been told is somewhat unusual , hereditary Or no I can’t do anything about it
 
I have no diabetes in my family other than my brother (type 1) . My mother had RA, she was obese because she was confined to a wheel chair and couldn’t move, but no diabetes. My dad likely was coeliac, he was extremely under weight. He didn’t have diabetes. No aunts or uncles with it. It blows my mind that I have it. I’ve always been thin, I was a competitive athlete right up until 12 years ago. I ate healthy, no chips, no crisps, no junk, just basic food. I rarely eat red meat. I don’t drink, never smoked. I do have coeliac. Genetically, I have no risk factors for type 2. It just blows my mind. And when you press medical people about it, they stare blankly at you, which means they are clueless. I feel angry over it. They do question my type, but how long do I wait. Diet does little to bring my blood sugars down. And I have hypos ! Nothing really works.
 
My brothers, my mother all had Diabetes never thought I would get it, sadly I did and I tried reverse it by loosing weight strict diet etc sadly, did not work so i guess genetic?

Have any of you been tested for MODY?
Diabetes running strongly in families is a reason to test for this.
