With my Dad I think Diabetes was just a contributing factor. It was actually Coronary Artery Disease (heart attack) that he died from. Now also important to note.. my GP has said no one ever dies of diabetes.. but from complications related to diabetes.. whether serious hypoglycaemia or dka or more slow things like heart issues made worse by diabetes but never the diabetes itself.
I think you are right! I was the only diabetic (Type1) in my family from 1879 till the present. Yet my maternal grandmother was crippled with rheumatoid arthritis and my sister has the same. My father was seriously asthmatic, which affected my brother in his younger years. My daughter is allergic to gluten. As you say, these are all autoimmune conditions and my version of it turned out Type1.Whilst there is no history of any type of diabetes in my family, both my mother and father have (different) autoimmune conditions, As autoimmune conditions tend to gather and Type 1 is an autoimmune condition, I wonder if this made me more susceptible to Type 1.
The reason I ask this question is I have been diagnosed as T1. Listed on my Dads death certificate one of the causes of his death was Diabetes Mellitus! He got it much later on in life!
I have recently found out that one of my 2nd Cousins on my Dads side has Diabetes but he is T2. These are the only family members I know to have Diabetes.
My mother in law has type 1, so does my husband and my 7 year old sonI was always told that type 1 usually misses out a generation , apparently my grandfather had it , my father didn't but seems he passed it on to me , I never had children so stopped the cycle , I wonder if my grandfather died of it as insulin must have only just of been discovered and my father never mentioned it .
Have any of you been tested for MODY?My brothers, my mother all had Diabetes never thought I would get it, sadly I did and I tried reverse it by loosing weight strict diet etc sadly, did not work so i guess genetic?
