which meter is best and the differnce in price of test strip

OK well I an accu chek aviva meter last week and have since found the test strips are very expensive about £25 for 50 in my local chemist.

well I looked on ebay and these particular test strips are the most expensive also.

I also discovered on ebay a meter called bayer contour and was surprised to see that test strips for it were only £11.50 for 50.
infact it only costs £6.50 for one of these meters complete ith 25 lancets and 25 test strips.

well my question is why is there such a big differnce is price is the bayer contour inferior or not as good a quality as to the accu chek aviva?

I have also alot seen alot of posts about type 2 diabetics who can not get strips on prescription well a good alternative is ebay have a look for yourself much cheaper than the chemist
 
your message is a little confusing. you say you also found a bayer contour on ebay and it was expensive then go on to say how cheaply you saw the meter?. Anyhow, I have bought Contour Strips from ebay for around the £12 mark for 50 you just have to keep looking. The reason why they are much cheaper on enay is that most of them have been obtained on prescription, and then resold on ebay. I might not agree with this practise but at lest it allows me to obtain strips that I would otherwise not be able to afford! :D Hope this helps.
 
giblet have seen corrected my post I meant the test strips for accu check aviva were very expensive conpared to the bayer meter which are realtively cheap my question is which one of these meters are better?
 
ah ok! Well to be honest, use the one you like the most. You'll find plenty of threads on here that relate to meter accuracy, but in the end it's down to user choice. As long as the meter is accurate when checked with control fluid, just stick to it. Many people worry when comparing meters, some a little higher some lower, but you could worry yourself into an early grave comparing them. I have three different meters and they are all different, but certainly within the targets set by the manufacturers. Personally I have just swapped to a Contour USB, still made by bayer, but its much less hassle to download to the computer. Hope this helps

Curious to know why you are having to buy meters and strips? Do you not get them free?
I got my meter and supply of strips and lancets from hospital and get repeat prescriptions from GP for lancets and strips as and when needed

I use Bayer Ascensia Contour meter with bayer contour strips? All free.
 
I use an Abbott Freedom Freestyle Lite and the strips are normally around £25 for 50 in Asda. I bought some on Ebay a lot cheaper, the last lot were £42 (incl P&P) for 150. I saw my DSN yesterday and she has agreed to put them on repeat prescription. Yet to be confirmed :lol:
The Bayer Contour strips seem to be cheaper on Ebay. I rang Bayer and said a friend had recommended their Contour and they sent me out a free meter.
The Ascensia strips fit the Contour meter. You may find that the Ascensia strips are cheaper on Ebay.

What happened to Ascensia MICROFILL test strips?

In January 2009, Ascensia MICROFILL test strips were renamed CONTOUR test strips to match the name of the CONTOUR meter. At the same time, Ascensia MICROLET lancets were renamed MICROLET lancets. Only the names changed – the test strips and lancets have stayed the same and the prescribing codes are also the same.

I cant get them on prescription as I am npot diabetic I have pre-diabetes meaning that I have impaired glucose tolerance and impaired fasting glycaemia which means If I dont change my lifestyle I soon will be diabetic. So I bought a meter to check which foods are raising my bg levels so that I can avoid them.
