Which Type are we - 1 or 2 or 3c

I have tried finding the answer to this question for quite sometime now but still not 100% of the answer. This is for My wife who is 35 ( Asian) with normal BMI.

Here is our journey so far:

Age 10 - Acute Pancreatitis
Surgery performed and a "duct" created . Apparently no harm caused to the pancreas. This was done long ago and in India so we cant be 100% sure of what was done but remember being told that there is nothing to worry about now.

Age 18 and Age 21 - Pain due to inflammation around Pancreas.
Again not sure of the details but no procedure performed and pain went way in a few days.

No problems since then

June 2015 - Age 33
Hb1Ac - 56
Told was pre diabetic ,asked to reduce wait

Nov 2017 - Age 35
Hb1Ac - 99 mmol/mol
Very High BG - average 14
no Diet
Weight - 62 Kgs
Diet , no medicines

Jan 2018 - Age 35
Hb1Ac - 69 mmol/mol
BG in control - Average 8-9
Weight - 55 Kgs
Diet , no medicines
C-Peptide Level 699 pmol/L
Insulin 69 pmol/L
Urine cPeptide/Creatinine ratio (UCPCR) = 1.79 nmol/mmol

March 2018 - Age 35
Hb1Ac - 50 mmol/mol
BG in control - Average 6-8
Weight - 52 Kgs
Normal BMI
Diet , no medicines


based on the above - which type are we ?
 
Looking at the HbA1c levels and their changes I would have said your wife has been Type 2 since at least 2015 , probably before that.
An HbA1c higher than 48 mmol/mol would normally be used to diagnose Type 2. The pancreatic conditions earlier in life may be a contributing factor although the high insulin levels in Jan 2018 (assuming it was a fasting insulin test) shows that insulin is being produced so that kind of discounts Type 1 unless she is having an extremely long and benign honeymoon period.
I've never had any experience of a c-peptitde test so no idea what those levels mean although I'm sure there will be someone along who has..
Bringing HbA1c down by diet alone is usually a sign of Type 2 being controllable and so far as I am aware Type 1 and 3c would not react in this way without insulin or meds.
Feel free to shoot me down Im just a fairly well read Type 2 (maybe ex Type 2).

Many thanks for your reply. Yes it does sound that way although the consultant we saw yesterday said we will probably need insulin in the future could be months could be years and that's what caused some anxiety.
BtW you are doing very well looking at your HB1Ac . well done!

Consultants will nearly always say that as in their experience most patients have trouble achieving what a lot of people here have (reduction in HbA1c results) because the patients are constantly given incorrect advice. The chronic progressive disease becomes a self fulfilling prophecy if you do what most doctors or diabetes nurses tell you to do because at the core incorrect dietary advice is given. The poor patient is doomed from the start.
 
The lab work will significantly aid in the diagnosis. Don’t speculate as it’s pointless. I went through the type 1, LADA, Type 2 scenario in my head for a year.

It's possible, but by the looks of things your wife has already made some lifestyle changes which will help avoid the most complications of diabetes and probably also avoid what consultants consider to be the inevitable progress of the disease. That statement is based on years of telling type IIs to carry on eating sensibly (what is sensible? They're supposed to be the experts, but know little about nutrition).
