I have been going to bed and feeling dry mouthed and thirsty. I have a glass of water with my meds. Tonight this was at 11:30. It is now 1:40 and I am so thirsty that I need water or I will not be able to sleep. This has happened for 3-4 days now. I am on metformin 500g x 3 per day. My eyes feel dry too. I wake up in the morning and need a glass of water. Any ideas?

I think your blood sugar level is too high. Medicine alone cannt control the same. Avoive high carb foods as far as possible (especially at night). Say goodbye to sugar and other sweetners (Stevia may be ok). Do exercise as per the advise of your physician.

Do you test? At a guess your in renal mode

Hi!
Was it very recent that you started a low carb diet? If so,in the early stages whilst your body is adjusting you do lose a lot of water and sodium so it's very important to keep well hydrated and not avoid salt but as others have said the thirst can be a classic symptom if your blood glucose levels are high and your kidneys are expelling the excess glucose via your urine and thus dehydrating your body.

Have a look at

This is the weight loss page, but the effects of the diet are the same.

If you haven't, look at

as well.
You are a total star! I have been completely blaming myself but despite my proactive response (immediate diet change and good weight loss) I have been given a very hard time by people at work who have either passed comment on what I'm eating or even worse have kept offering me chocolate. This forum and my family have been a life line!

Renal mode is your kidneys working hard when your blood sugar is high, your body gets rid of the glucose through your urine you become dehydrated through all the fluids you lose

I am overwhelmed by the support I have received and would like to thank all the people who have answered my questions.
My diet consists of poached egg x 2 and 2 rashers of bacon or a piece of smoked mackerel. Sometimes I have Greek yoghurt mixed with a handful of berries. Lunch is usually veggies and blue cheese dip or tuna salad. I usually have a handful of berries most days. Evening meals are fish and greens or chicken in a cream sauce or ratatouille with Brie or bean bake with sour cream and cheese on top. Snacks are cheese or nuts but not every day. Had small glass of wine and half a very thin slice of birthday cake - chocolate when husbands birthday. Have also had one square of dark chocolate and one dark truffle in last 3 weeks. Only drink decaf coffee, water or black tea. Bs was 13.1 fasting when diagnosed. Bs between 6-6.6 fasting now. Between 5.3 and 6.8 in day. Got quite a few 7.4 - 8.4 readings in beginning. Eyes feeling dry last couple of days and had sore throat which then goes away after drinking something. Unless I am paranoid and coming down with cold. Will then feel very stupid!

Scandi, I can see nothing in your foods which would raise you unduly. Do you make sure to keep well hydrated over the day?

Hej! Have been on hols this week as it is half term so have drunk loads of cups of coffee and tea.

Your diet sounds great. When can I come round and join you for meals? !'ll bring my own sauerkraut and plenty of the mouldy stuff...

i agree, your diet looks awesome, no help from me for the thirst sorry

Coffee and teas don't work, especially coffee.
You need to drink plain water, I can't remember the exact amount, but it's at least two litres a day, maybe more.

tea dosent hydrate you? oh dear i drink about 10 at least cups of green tea a day

Tea certainly hydrates me ! I'm not a fan of plain water. Bung a teabag in and now we're talking !

Not for the start of a lchf diet.
Think you're probably past that stage by now.
Still, what do I know, I'll leave it to the experts.
Sure you can advise better.

You can normally tell if you are dehydrated by the colour of your urine. If it is a very pale yellow or straw coloured, that is fine.. If it is darker, more amber coloured, then you could be dehydrated. There are loads of websites about this if you Google.

I get a very dry mouth most days, nothing to do with diabetes as it is caused by a breast cancer drug I am on. I think I am thirsty, but I'm not. All I need is a small sip of water to slosh around my mouth. This is always worse at night in bed, but definitely not thirst. Maybe you are mistaking a dry mouth for thirst? Just a thought.
