Why are after-meal blood sugar targets so low...

Hello everyone!

I'm new here so please be kind :-) apologies if this has been discussed before, but it's a tricky thing to search for. (FYI I'm Type 1, have been for abour 6 years, I'm 24 and pregnant with my first baby - woop! I take Lantus Glargine and Novorapid. I carb count but haven't done DAFNE)

So my question is this: Why are after-meal blood sugar targets so low if insulin takes so long to work?

In case that's not clear - my diabetes / prenatal team monitors me very closely now that I am "with child". Apparently I should be around 6 or 7 two hours after eating. But NovoRapid can take up to 5 hours to finish working. So if I'm 6 two hours after eating, aren't I just going to keep going lower? I'm getting frustrated because before lunch my levels were in the 5s, I took my insulin 15 minutes early and ate my lunch at midday. I did a blood test at 3.45pm and I'm 9. WHY! I took a correction dose, but I'm thinking that if the first injection hasn't stopped working then I'm going to be low later on. Would you have corrected for this?

Perhaps I simply need to adjust my lunch-time ratio? I'm usually 3:1 breakfast, 1:1 lunch and tea. I have needed to increase my glargine this week so perhaps my novo needs to follow suit.

I'm usually stable but I'm getting to the point in my pregnancy where I'm being thrown off track.

Sorry for the rant! Any help / advice would be fantastic!

6? Hmm that is a bit weird seeing as they'll tell someone who is 7.8 and under they aren't diabetic.

Perhaps a target is just a target and you should shoot a little higher for where you'll likely land. I dont know much about type 1- my partner eats fast food exclusively and just adjusts insulin but I doubt he's in range most of the time...

Honestly it will do you good to try and aim for those parameters.. Some people have reported a hyperglycemia 'snowball effect' once they reach 8.

Congratulations on your pregnancy by the way!

Perhaps wait between meals to see if you really do continue to go lower and lower... I don't know about administering insulin but hopefully someone will come along who does... Requirements vary so much from person to person...

Is there anything faster-acting do you know?
