Why did you get tested?

I have no diabetic friends either . Like you my husband and children are supportive but aren't diabetic. My mum is but hers is controlled now and doesn't understand why my readings aren't the same etc... but everyone is different their bodies tolerate or not different things . So I feel quite alone with it . Although have found this forum fantastic for advice.
 
I agree there - this forum has been really helpful and there are many kind people on it.
 
Had screwy blood glucose since I was 4 yrs old.
Knew I was heading for D since my 20s
Diagnosed with PCOS and prolactinoma, dating from my late teens
Been slowly climbing through pre-diabetes for 20+ years

Held it off as long as I could, but it got me about 5 years ago.

Yet on the days I was given a Fasting BG test, I kept scoring under 7, so I only got diagnosed a couple of months ago.

Thank heavens I've been eating Low Carb for decades, eh?
 
I went to my GP with what I thought might be a urine infection. GP checked a urine sample and said it was just cystitis and sent me on my way. The next night I had an unbearable pain in my side and ended up going to an out of hours doctor who checked another urine sample which indicated an infection and showed high glucose levels so he checked my BG, which was 22. He then said I probably had type 2 and sent me to hospital the next morning where they diagnosed a kidney infection and spent the day trying to get my BG under control. That was just under a year ago. It was only after I was diagnosed that I realised I'd been suffering from most of the symptoms but hadn't put it all together (lost a lot of weight, tired all the time, very thirsty and weeing more at night and frequent headaches)
 
Had my BP taken at my local chemist who immediately sent me to GP - after echo sent straight to Emergency. Many tests later diagnosed as hypertensive, hypokalemic and UTI. Hospital wanted a whole raft of tests done including a 24 hour urine collection - when the technician handed me one bottle, I said that wouldn't be enough, so got 2 bottles. When I returned the test to the lab and tech saw the volume, she asked me if I was diabetic and the penny finally dropped. Saw my GP and asked to be tested. Had so many tests within the space of a couple of weeks my head was reeling. Ended up with diagnoses for hypothyroid, vitamin D3 deficiency and Type 2. Was a real roller coaster ride!
 
I moved house hence moved doctors and the appointment with the nurse who did some basic stats dip tested for sugar. I left drs and went into Sainsburys to do my weekly shop to receive a phone call to ask me to return to the surgery. I had to promise to return the next morning where I was immediately started on metformin. I was comfortable with metformin as I had taken it in the past for pcos but stopped it as I didn't want to get pregnant and take the pill.
As a child of 6 and thereafter I had reoccurring thrush but gp said it was bad hygiene to my mum. I guess in the 70s it was unheard of type 2 diabetes?
 
My daughter came over to make a nice Saturday lunch and afterwards my breathing was playing up and wouldnt settle down and I ended up in A&E with BS of 27. I wasnt really that surprised as I had quite a few symtoms though.
 
I went with what I thought was a gym injury, plantar fasciitis. GP said I think you have diabetes. What ?! Says ex chef me, I eat healthily, go to the gym, quit smoking. He was right though and despite no symptoms at all, my HbA1c was 13%
 
I went for a full check-up after my 46th birthday just as a kind of MOT. Heart function, liver function, thyroid function all good... cholesterol bad and by the way, you're diabetic. Not much over the threshold, but definitely diabetic.
I didn't have any clue beforehand - it was only with hindsight that a few minor problems were explained that I had thought were just natural consequences of getting older.
 
Went for a scan for female problems for which I needed an empty bladder, after sending me to the toilet 4 times I was told my bladder was still full.
Off to doctors as I assumed this was a problem, saw a doc who said it wasn't an issue - worried all weekend and went to see another doc who said 'I'm going to get you tested for diabetes - BINGO!!
 
Such interesting experiences, some of us are so lucky we got diagnosed before any damage was done, awful to think so many others have Diabetes and don't yet know it
 
I had blurred vision, sleep problems, stuttering,no energy, kept going toilet, balance problems and always thirsty, for couple of years ect said I didn't feel right but it was when my hair started falling out that I was given a blood test! That's when they found out I was diabetic. Two of my sisters are diabetics also.
 
Forgot to say I do have cataracts and macular in both eyes, have for few years but I'd get bad blurring so I knew somat was wrong and it wasn't the eye problems cos I had so many othere symptoms, I'd just doze of or go funny and shake and stutter, was like that for few years then othere symptoms started. Still I know now what it all was. Good luck to all of us
 
Like you I have no diabetic friends and I live alone, I have sight problems, my asthma is controlled but I'm disabled in my legs, doctor suggested amputating when I was 4, been suggested again couple of years ago but no chance I just keep going, my daughter and family helps me, but yes it's difficult, I was in the war in Middle East so that's made me stronger I suppose and I don't give up easily, when I get down I just think about the people that are worse off than me, doesn't always work but this forum has certainly helped me a lot and I appreciate the help I e had from everyone. Thanks
 
I lost a load of weight for no reason, and had a couple of nights of constant loo visits. Plus lack of energy. So went to the docs and told her I suspected i had diabetes, had a fasting blood test the next day and a few days later i had a call saying my blood sugar was very high. The worst time was waiting for the results and looking up unintentional weight loss on the net.. the phone call came as a relief!
 
I'd been feeling pretty rough for a few months and had the classic peeing all the time and drinking a bottle of water overnight symptoms. My wife decided to get a blood meter to test me and when I tested I was shocked to see it reading 26.

The next day (which was a saturday) I went to see the doctor, who was, it has to be said, brilliant: she got some emergency tests done that day and they confirmed that I had diabetes
 
I was having clods and coughs regularly. The last time had really bad chest infection and blocked sinus. Started having blurred vision and optician sent me to the doctor's as she suspected Diabetes. After the blood test confirmed type 2 Diabetes and now i am on Metformin and diet-control.
 
I had pre op blood tests for a shoulder operation and the hospital phoned to say "you have filled the pre op form in to say you don't have diabetes, are you sure, your blood sugar is very high". Two sets of tests later and 9 days ago it was confirmed I do. I have no symptoms.
 
I went to docs with symptoms of fatigue, thinking I was going thru the change being 51, blood test came back type 2 I was shocked. Never entered my head even though my sister was pre diabetic last yr; all going really well now but still don't know if I'm going thru the change!!!
 
Believe me if you are you will know! Sorry but you don't really want that! Thank god I've past that stage but went through it all again but 100 times worse when I went on meds! Side effect, Felt like I was sitting in sauna 24/7! Good luck
