I'm sure I'm not alone here desperate to try out a libre but still in the waiting list after months! Having numerous complications despite good control for at least 25 of the 31 years diagnosed they are still happening and I can only wonder if there are spikes I'm not aware of and thought this is a just about affordable way for me to see.

Just cannot understand why other diabetics on eBay wish to put profit before their fellow sufferers :-( Even though I work I couldn't afford the prices they reach, certainly not with a baby!

The amount of adverts I've seen for them is almost laughable (apart from the fact it sickens me as opposed to even encourage a smile) and all at stupid prices. I appreciate bidders are encouraging this but how much nicer it would be if someone had a spare and offered it at market rate here. Just a thought!
 
Because those of us that are civic minded are already supplying their spares to people that have asked, is the answer to your question!
 
Some NHS hospitals (mine) are now recommending libres to be used and getting CCG funding after consultants write to the CCG's to say they are cheaper in the long run.

I refused a Libre but my options to say yes are still there.

So hospitals if they have good consultants may also be taking some....
 
Thanks all! I might mention at clinic in a few weeks time and see what they can do! I'm not usually the sort of person to embrace new technology quickly but want to live as healthily as I can to see my baby grow up and would love to keep an eye on glucose levels this closely to act faster! Do you mind me asking where your hospital is please donnellydogs?

What a decent chap you are Tim! See in all honesty this is what I would do and have done and just can't get my head around a fellow sufferer profiteering like I've seen! This site is essentially all about being in it together so am guessing they aren't a member! At least hope not!!
 
Ebay is a very bad idea. There are frequent problems with the Libre, and Abbott will replace them when that happens. None of that if you go thro eBay. Be patient - you will get there.

And it is worth it, and you may well find an answer.
 
Bear in mind though, that anyone giving away a Libre reader is only likely to be doing so because it's no use to them. Ask them why, and what they'd suggest. There's only one other CGM out there, that's the Dexcom. (OK, yeah, there's the Minimed 530 with the Enlite CGM). Maybe you'll find out that you didn't really want the Freestyle Libre after all.
 
My Consultant suggest a Libre but there's no funding where I live so like many I'll have to pay. At least the penny jar is getting fuller while I'm waiting!! . Sue xxxx

Have you asked consultant to write a letter to your CCG stating that it would be more cost effective?

Have you suggested to your CCG that they consider your having a Libre.

You need to have a cost proof letter proving the need to test more than once a day and the cost of equipment etc.. And to still allow one blood test strip a day for blood testing.

If you can write a letter for your consultant to send with their signature on it.. Brilliant.. You are effectively taking workload off them. If you write a letter to the funding Mansger diabetes at CCG asking that you be given full and fair consideration then you will stand a chance of getting one rather than saying your CCG won't fund.

People must state their cases.
 
So why are people selling these on e-bay rather than using them themselves? I don't get it?

I was thinking about trying one of these in the lead up to and during some of my longer runs/races
 
donnellysdogs you are 100% right,that is exactly what I did,it did delay me from getting my pump by 8 months but I eventually got funding for a CGM and was certainly worth the wait.I am now a happy pumper.

Its no good moaning unless you do something about the situation yourself.

If a full detailed account and costings are individually tailore to the individual and go to consultant and copied to CCG's then more people would be getting them funded.

I have a superb consultant at my hospital but she cannot be the only one.
 
Sorry, I'm still learning all the abbreviations, but what's a CCG? It's probably something blindingly obvious and I'll kick myself when you tell me
 
Clinical Comissioning Groups- they are reorganised PCT's with extra top heavy management layers in.. Even more than the PCT's had.

Thanks for the explanation. Having never really had to call on the NHS for anything until now, I've not paid a lot of attention to how it all works. I too would desperately love to have a CGM, but realise it's probably viewed as an unnecessary luxury and I'll have to fund it myself. I'm not grumbling though, as like all other Ds on insulin, our strips, lancets, meters, needles and Insulin are free.
 
Just depends on how much you are willing to state your case to get anything.....
 
@ElyDave, people are profiteering because they can. You can buy four sensors and two readers per month as a registered user. You only need two sensors, so if you have one spare for yourself you can quickly stockpile. They have a use by date and are scarce so people are selling them on. The crazy thing is that at the amounts they are going for on ebay, you might as well buy a dexcom.

I have good control, but would just like to do away with the 6-7 finger stabbing incidents every day. It would be so lovely to swipe a meter at the sensor and get a good idea of what my bg is doing. I therefore feel I have no case at all. I understand some people struggle with unexpected hypos and hypers than they can't understand and a CGM would help them enormously to perhaps take the necessary action to avoid both.
 
I wrote a post on this some time back. The insight that one gains from having access to CGM in some form is astounding and would benefit absolutely any T1. You would literally have to test 50 times a day to get the same level of detail. I can see a point in time where clinics lend receivers and transmitters for 1-3 months and the user has to pay for sensors. It would massively improve the way in which diabetics learned about their condition.
