Will I definitely get type 2 diabetes ?

Hi there :)

I am almost 25 year old and I have a family history of type 2 diabetes : My mother has 15 siblings and 5 of them were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in their 50's to 70's
My mother is very cautious with her diet and her blood sugar is normal. She doesn't really exercice (I try to convince her) but she eats no carbs either because she's well aware of the risks.

On the other hand, I have always had a low bmi (18,5 at the moment) despite the fact I eat a lot. I remember in my teens, I used to eat a ton of junk food and sweets and that kept going until my early 23 when my endocrinologist noticed I had a fasting blood sugar of 6,1 mmol/L and an Ac1 of 5,5%
I can't gain weight. My endo seemed really worried and gave me a bunch of advice to control the blood sugar.

A year and a half later, my fasting blood sugar is 5 mmol/L, and I noticed it is lower (around 4mmol/l) if i exerciced the week prior. I have completely changed my diet. I follow a low carb regimen and I know which food I must avoid (junk food, bread, pastas, and obviously cakes ...) but I still allow myself a treat from time to time

I run irregularly, I could be more assiduous but it's not easy to adapt to the weather
However, I will probably get a treatmill in the new few week so I will be able to walk 30 min a day :)

Anyway, my question is : will I definitely get type 2 diabetes ? Can I keep my blood sugar under control forever ? I have seen several members of my family suffer from this condition, and I want to avoid it

Plus, do you have any tips to relieve sugar cravings ? I usually just have a handful of almonds with a greek yoghurt and that does the trick, but sometimes they're harder to handle ... I was a huge consumer of junk food

Thank you so much :)

Ps : English is not my first language, sorry

Hi @fizzy-banana , welcome to the forums.

Your English is better than mine so I wouldn't worry about it not being your first language. We don't normally have grammar police around here, we have other things to worry about.

It sounds as though you are doing all the right things to keep diabetes at bay so keep on keeping on! All you can do is watch your glucose levels from time to time and take the appropriate action if things are going wrong.

Relax, have some nuts.

Anyway, my question is : will I definitely get type 2 diabetes ?

Welcome to the forum. The answer to your question is Not definitely! You are clearly doing the sort of things that should help you avoid any problems. Obviously there are no guarantees, but you are doing all the right things.

No need to apologise about your English, it's perfect. Where do you live? You have a lot more knowledge about your BG and dietary matters than most non diabetics in the UK, probably more knowledge than a lot of diabetics in the UK.

I wish I knew the answer with respect to sugar cravings, I've been blessed with never having a sweet tooth in the first place, possibly because my mother was always struggling with weight so things like chocolate, cakes, biscuits etc, even sugar in tea/coffee were not really part of our diet when we were kids.

All the best.

Chill-out. You seem to be doing all the right things to look after your health. Remember, even if you are destined to get Type 2 in the future, the longer you can delay its onset the less likely you are to get the nasty side effects. Keep up your healthy lifestyle, check your BG from time to time, but most importantly stop worrying.

With your diet I would say you’re highly unlikely to ever develop T2DM. It’s a disease of too much glucose in the body, and you aren’t putting any in. Your liver will be manufacturing a small amount but it’ll never be enough to bring about insulin resistance.

I say relax and keep doing what you’re doing :)

Hi Fizzy Banana,

I wouldn’t say I have sugar cravings but I do enjoy sweet foods etc. To get around that I am exploring the use of sweetners where I have a say in what goes in to anything I eat and cutting out ready sweetened foods etc if they have sugar in them.

My father died at 59. I didn’t. Why, I think mainly because he was a heavy drinker and smoker and I haven’t been, though I cannot be sure but I like to think I have had a healthier lifestyle than him. So am guessing the same might well apply to you (healthier lifestyle and longer life I mean).

PS I had Greek yoghurt today with fruit jam made with artificial sweetner. It was very nice indeed. Not a lot of sweetner though I might add.

So sorry for my late reply ! (I forgot my password :shy:)

Anyway, thank you so much for all of your replies :) it's really helpful
I appreciate your kind words and I hope everything is going well for you

Davidgrahamjones, thank you ! I live in France but I am a pharmacy student so that may explains why I have some knowledge on that matter?

A month ago, as I was curious I checked my postprandial glucose level with my mother's glucometer after a heavy carb meal (huge pizza and ice cream) and that showed :
4,7 mmol/l fasting glucose
9,9 mmol/l (!) an hour later
6,05 mmol/l 2 hours later

Is it normal to experience such a spike ? Does that make me intolerant and should I avoid carbs at all costs ?

I tested strawberries as well, and they didn't seem to modify my sugar level

Thanks for reading me :)
