Hello everyone,Im new to this site,My daugther has had diabetes for a year now and I still feeling like i dont have a clue. One week her bg levels are fine and the next all over the place no matter what I do.I have read about carb counting but it all seems very complicated. Also I wonder if this really would help control her levels.I am finding it all very stressful and would be happy for any advice, thanx

Hi Martina,

Without a doubt your daughter would benefit from attending a carb-counting course. They will teach her to match her insulin to carbs she consumes at each meal (insulin/carb ratios) but will also give advice and practical tips on how insulin works, and its duration in the body (insulin profiles).

I haven't come across anyone who has not benefited from the course, and most people who attend do come away with a much better understanding of their diabetes than beforehand. The adult version is the DAFNE course, but there is also a similar course for children, but I can't remember what it is called.

Hi Martina,
I am mum to a 21 year old son who was diaganosed 7 years ago. I still am learning as diabetes is so unpredictable. I think you just have to learn to accept it although it has taken me a long time. How old is your daughter. I know my son was in denial for a long time and didnt do the things he was supposed to, but I feel that he has just started to want to take control for himself. He is going on a DAFNE course in the next couple of weeks (He asked his nurse for this) and Im hoping this will help his control. I still have to nag him to test though!

my daughter is seven. Her nurse has sugested an insulin pump to help gain better control. However I am unsure and would be very gratful if anyone could offer any advice.

My son is only 3 and been diabetic since he was 8 months old. I have very good control (mostly) of Khaleb's levels. I find sticking to a good routine and giving long acting injections at the same time each day helps. I also carb count but don't need to be extremely accurate.

I suppose you have to identify what things are making wonky levels and then work out how to make diabetes fit with what your daughter is doing or eating. Life happens and levels wont be perfect all the time.

A pump is also an option. There are pros and cons and you would certainly have to carb count quite carefully.

If you post some questions in the Youth section you'll find many more parents to share experience. There are a few parents with girls around your daughter's age.

Hope we can help you. Diabetes can be very frustrating.
