Worried about diabetic risks

Hi all

I am a 35 year old male, ex rugby player, 6'2'' and about 19 stone. Yep quite heavy but also very wide! I do carry a bit spare around the middle but go to the gym regularly and cycle to work every day which is a 10 mile round trip- so am active!

I had a glucose tolerence test in March which was absolutly fine- but this morning was playing around with a blood glucose monitor and it came out at a reading of 6.6 this was at 7.00am before breakfast- so could be regarded as a fasting reading. When I have done this sort of test before it has usually come out at 4.5 ish. I am now a little worried I am developing diabetes! I am particularly worried about this as I have suffered from Lone atrial fibrillation in the past and have had 4 cardioversions. I have to take sotalol and approvel to manage that- so getting diabetes would almost guarantee me a stroke!

This is probably me being the typical 'worried well' but does anyone have any expereince of this sort of rise? Would diabetes develop in this period of time? any help of thoughts would be great!

WE don't really know how long diabetes takes to develop and over 7 fasting is quite high, but it's happened once. We can't diagnose on the forum. So if you're really worried, go see your GP. Otherwise you'll be seeing him for an ulcer. I have survivd a stroke.

Meters can be inaccurate. Up to 20% inaccurate.

Post meal blood sugars go off the scale earlier in the disease process than fasting sugars.

Why not check yourself two hours after a big carby meal. If you are over ten or so it could be worth asking your doctor for an accurate reading from a vein.
