Worried about my friend who has just gone on insulin

I am really worried for my friend she was diagnosed as type 2 and been that for 20 years but never given much information on diabetics. She takes sugar in her tea and has quite a few cups during the day. Her early morning used to be 9 which is high but now its in the 20 which is miles to high. Can any one confirm when you should test her BS after eating her nurse told her it doesn't matter can be straight after or an hour or 2 hours after. She is still taking metformin another diabetic tablet and also insulin which was 3mg now gone up to 16mg but not working as after food she is 21.6 or 22.8.
I am diabetic myself and on metformin and keep my BS down by watching what i eat and test now and again especially if i eat something new. But I am not sure of how things go when your on insulin - thanks to anyone who can help :?:

Hi Sue I can see just why you are concerned about your friend, her Bs are very high. it seems quite shocking that she appears not to be better supported by her diabetes team.

If you look through the various posts here you will find plenty of information that you can give her, or better still, if she is able get her to look.

I am on insulin, Novorapid 3 times daily and Lantus before bedtime and I test before I eat and then 2 hrs later and yor BS should be down in the 6s. When I began to eat low carb I tested 1 hr after a meal, to see how much the food i'd eaten affected me, but i'v relaxed a bit with that. I also test before bed.

It may be very difficult for her to cut out the sugar in her tea, but It would be a start, and there are loads of subtitutes out there.

it may be useful to look at the low carb threads to give you a guide about reducing carbs.

I'm pleased she has you as a friend and support, so you arm yourself with info, it's all here

All the best

Kate

Thanks for your reply. My friend had the nurse come round and has told her to only do her BS when she gets up before her morning tea and breakfast she was 12.6. They have increased her insulin to 18mg. The nurse said the strips were expensive and only to use them then and not to test any other time. With her BS so high I am shocked that she has been told this. She is still 12.6 in the morning but has improved at night its the same 12.4 used to be in the 20s. My friend is rather stubon and wont eat brown bread always has white which isn't helping her. I have tried to explain to her about carbs that its not just about not eating sugar but its hard work. I will keep trying.

As a item not about the above I love your cat where did you get it from would love one

Many thanks for your time

Hi Sue, the cat is one of the avatars offered by the forum. You will find the gallery when you click on Profile, Edit Avatar, in the User Control Panel. There are other cats too.
