worried about my mum

Hi all,

I was diagnosed with type 2 a week ago and have been testing my glucose regularily since.
While I was at my mums (aged 69) I thought I would check here glucose and it was 5.6 before we ate (mine was 4.0). We had some dinner (pork chop, yorshire puds, mash potatoe, brocolli, carrots, coliflower, gravy) then waited 90 mins then tested again, my mums reading was 15.3 (mine was 5.4).
This has realy worried me. I know its only one reading & there is a very very small chance of an error but if the reading is correct then does this sound like it may be a problem.

Thanks for any input.

Jon

T2 diabetes has a stron genetic thread, so I'd get Mum checked out at the doctor's. If only for both of your peace of mind

Hi there it does appear she may have Type2 as that is outside the normal range for a non-diabetic. Best thing is to get her checked out. I do regular checks on my glucose meter now though with a solution to make sure the meter is right so I know every time I test my glucose is ok. I would get her down to the nearest chemist or GP to make a proper diagnosis though.

Thanks for your quick replies, I realy appreciate your input.
Ill get her to go and have a checkup and report back what the outcome is.

Thankyou again for your help.

Jon

Did you hear anything Jon? What was the outcome?

She got her results yesterday and yes she has type two (diet only).
Her levels are quite high (6.0-7.0 before meals and 13.0-16.0 90 mins after meals)

She is old school, learned from her mum. Sunday dinners a lot of the time so its a real battle getting her to eat healthier.
Im trying sweet potato instead of her usual mash and lots more fish, porridge or kippers for breakfast, lean chicken or oily fish + salads for lunch.

Thankyou very much for asking, this forum is fab, lots of nice people helping each other out.
I dont know what I would have done if this forum and its members were not here.

on the subject of sunday dinners, keep a mind of yorkshire puddings ... innoucuous they may look (yoda) but they spike my blood sugar super high! xxx

Yes Jon diet sounds good. Also everyone is great here - they have helped me keep a very positive attitude throughout my time on the forum. I think things like roast dinners can be enjoyed from time to time if she likes. However possibly after the blood glucose levels are a bit more stable she could discuss this further with her GP or diabetes clinic. If her BG's don't improve though it might be worth her discussing the option of tablets to help the insulin to be absorbed into the cells.
