2ndly have been reading all the storie about hypos i have been made fully aware of theese my main concern is that my job involves a lot of walking are they really that bad has yet havent had one and have only been told to try get my sugars down to 10 pre meal and bed wakeing i am really worried that when i do resume work i will have a lot of theese with some of the stories ive read on here

hi carlos, not sure about an extra sicknote, i was diagnosed on a sat and back to work by the friday so just depends on circumstances i suppose. I work as a fencing contractor, which is pretty physical work with a lot of walking, i had a few hypos when i first started back to work and within a week i had to stop taking insulin in the morning and at lunch, 4 yrs on i still only inject for my evening meal and my long acting at night. Every individual case is different so just make sure you have gluco tabs or lucozade near to hand when you start back incase of hypos and hopefully after a couple of weeks you'll know how work affects your bloods, try not to stress too much!

Hi Carlos

My view. Your GP should only be giving you sick notes if he is satisfied that you are unable to perform your current work duties because your state of health prevents you doing so. If you cannot get another sick note from your GP because he thinks you are fit enough to do your job then you will have to go back to your employer and seek advice from HR or Occupational Health on whether they want you to report for work. Sick notes are not issued to cover your employer arranging an OH appointment! If you are not sick but they do not want you to report for work until you are seen by OH, then they should pay you to stay at home. If you are in a Trade Union I would keep them in the picture as to your situation. You should be covered by the disability provisions of the Equality Act 2010 as it looks at your ability to do everyday functions if you were not taking medication. That requires your employer to make reasonable adjustments on account of your disability (diabetes). One such adjustment might be putting you on paid leave until you can be seen by OH.

Hope this helps.

Doug
