Would this cause my readings to be erratic.

Hi,
Have not been on in a while.
My readings in the last week or two have been all over the place. Sometimes very high and others not so.
But they do not seem consistent even on eating the same food.
I have been fairly stressed lately. My daughter had her 20 week scan and there seem to be major problems and the baby seems to be suffering either trisomy 13 or trisomy 18 with maybe trisomy 21 as the best but least likely outcome.

My daughter lives many, many miles away so unable to go visit and give hugs etc. She had emergency appt for Amnio but decided (through fear I think) not to have it but she has to have weekly scans. I feel unable to help in any way!!

I feel absolutely useless and unable to help.

Is this likely to cause my very erratic readings at the moment?? If so how can I compensate?

Hi Mervyn,

I am so so sorry for you, your daughter and the baby and being far away must be awful for you.

Stress does have an impact on your levels and this is what is probably causing them to be all over the place. I can't really advise anything that might help apart from lowering the stress which understandably you can't do. Perhaps your GP might have some ideas.

Sending you all my best wishes and I hope things turn out better than you expect.

Hi mervyn.
Poor you, you will be so worried AND worry creeps up the stress!!!!
YES all this 'will' push your levels 'upwards' even dispite the insulin dose you routinely use.
To help you cope with this, can you keep in touch [phone] so kept up to speed with events
gives you a sense of reassurrance as you will know whats transpiring.
Also could your other half give you a nice massage? even if its just a neck n shoulder one...
This is great to relieve worry/stress plus its helps you both to recognise the other is stressed.
Are you loosing sleep ? With the worry ?
Plan to go and vist them , if finacially possible for you, this will give you a sense of relief
as you will see them in person and can hug them n talk together .
If you are losing sleep, vist your GP ask for some help.
Please do let us know how you go on .
Much love and thoughts.
[[[[[Anna]]]]] hugs for you .

Aw Mervyn

Sorry times are hard at the moment,

Any rise due to stress is out of your control really. All you can aim to do is take the stress out of your life - not possible at the moment I wouldn't have thought.

All you can do is control the things you can control. ie your diet. This can be harder when other things are happening in our lives. It's easy to forget to look after yourself, as you want to put others first.

Love to all your family

Mervyn.
Does your daughter have a firm diagnosis? Was it a 'high risk' result from the blood test, did they diagnose something on scan?

If she hasn't already been given this http://www.arc-uk.org/ forward it on to her and have a read yourself. The more you know, the more in control you will feel.

Hi Mervyn,

No wonder your stressed! I hope that both your daughter and her baby are Ok. I had a stressful time during my pregnancy with concerns over my baby's heart. Thank goodness he was fine. I really hope that your daughter finds out asap and that everything is ok.

Sending hugs for all of you and positive wishes

Simply put, my daughter has not had a firm diagnosis, as although she had an emergency same day appointment for an Amnio test, she for some reason declined :? It may be that she was scared or even did not feel up to knowing. We have tried to tell her that it is very, very important to get the test but all she has promised is that she will have a think about it. She was very tearful and said that it was all happening too quickly and had decided for the time being not to have the test.

The scan showed some anomoly such as a leg not formed/growing as much as it should do. The baby's abdomen had a lot of fluid and the baby's head appeared an odd shape, although a later scan said the head now appeared ok.

She now has to have a weekly scan but as for the future we don't know. As far as I can tell the only sure way of diagnosis before birth is in fact the Amnio test but we cannot force her to do it. After all she is nearly 40yrs of age.

Once again thanks for all the kind words.

Mervyn, it sounds like she had a blood test that came back showing the babys risk of the three trisomies you mentioned are higher. Note, it is only a risk and does not give a definite diagnosis. Amnio also has risk and you're right, it is the only way to get an actual diagnosis. But your daughter and her partner probably does need time to think about the implications of ALL the options for her. When it comes to scans, they are very inaccurate and only as good as the operator, but far superior than they used to be.

I'm a Midwife. I've cared for women who choose to terminate a pregnancy with a baby with genetic problems and I've also cared for women who have chosen to carry their babies for as long as possible and deal with problems when they give birth.

I'm also a grandmother. Simply be there for her and help her understand her choices. I cannot recommend highly enough, contact with the link I gave you. They make sense of all the options and choices when it comes to antenatal screening for abnormalities.

Wishing you and your family peace and joy.
