hismom said:my son is now 16 and has been type 1 for 3 years. At first we found that getting control was fairly easy but as he got older and puberty set in the hormone surges caused so many problems his HBA1C went from 5.4 to 9.4 . He is very active and dances a lot which is also difficult on MDI . Eventually we insisted that he had a pump and we would fund it ourselves. The pump cost would be £2500 with £75 to £150 a month running costs. Our consultant changed and he got the offer of a pump on the nhs. He has had it for a year now and wouldnt give it back. He didnt want to have it attached all the time but now finds it better. It looks like a pager and works from a test meter so he can inject without people knowing. Hyops are easier to handle and when he is active we can turn the pump down quickly . In fact when he has tap dance he takes the pump off and has a snack he will then come out of the session with levels in the 6's. Was it the right decision to want a pump? Yes . You can try it and if you dont like it you can go back to MDI.
