Xylitol sweetener appearing in 'normal' foods - and killing dogs

It kills ferrets too according to the report. I have notified my ferret keeping friends. I used to keep ferrets and would hate to think I was poisoning them.

The problem is that xylitol's perfectly safe for people and manufacturers aren't necessarily going to consider that pets may be fed (or often opportunistically steal) sweet human food.:wideyed: Affected pet foods would hopefully have been withdrawn or xylitol removed from their ingredients..

I've posted @Brunneria's and @Robinredbreast's links on the doggy forum I use. Pets at Home give a short list of safe brands including Whole Earth which is the brand I opted for as it has no sugar at all added to it - though this choice was for my benefit originally and not the dogs!

@Squire Fulwood - Sorry a bit off topic but did your ferrets have little hammocks to sleep in?? :p Our local agricultural show used to have (I haven't been for a while) ferret racing, and between races the ferrets snoozed in cute little hammocks in their cages. I loved them but we weren't allowed to touch or hold them any more as someone unfortunately had got themselves nipped and made a big fuss...

My pet rats all had hammocks.
I used to make them out of squares of fleece and nappy pins.

Happy days.

Hello to everybody, I had ferrets and rats and I wish I had got them hammocks, but they had beds and curled up inside,,,, I still miss playing with the ferrets and the rats would sit on my shoulders and then nod off,,,,,happy days and plenty of memories,,,ttfn from Karen.
